About

The biennial UNILISA conference is organized in the context of Information Science, playing a crucial role in setting the pace for Library and Information Science and contributing to the transformation of society. Aligned with the University of South Africa’s mission of being an African University shaping futures in service to humanity, UNILISA aims to provide a platform for scholars from different countries to contemplate original and innovative approaches to strengthening the role of Information Science, libraries, and information services in transforming society and advancing the achievement of sustainable development goals. The Department of Information Science at the University of South Africa (UNISA) has its roots in the Unisa Library and Information Services, which has been in existence since 1946. In 2025, the Department of Information Science will be celebrating a diamond jubilee. Seventy years (70) since its inception relationships between academia and practice require reinforcement. This will be done through the diamond jubilee celebration being co-hosted by the Department and Library Services during the UNILISA conference.

A reinforced relationship of collaboration and support from academia, practice, industry or academic libraries is needed for the discipline of Information Science to withstand advanced changes in its environment. Furthermore, the interdisciplinary nature of Society 5.0 calls for closer collaboration between libraries, archives, museums, heritage organisations and academia to address complex societal challenges and promote innovation. In the era of disruptive technology, considerations of information science theories, practices and partnerships to strengthen the discipline in Society 5.0 requires exploration. Society 5.0 is central to human-centered approach to technological advancement, aiming to advance disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data analytics, cloud computing, blockchain technology and the internet of things (IoT) to address societal challenges and enhance human well-being. The discipline of information science acts as custodians of humanity's cultural heritage, scholarly research, and scientific knowledge. In the context of Society 5.0, this discipline is positioned to play crucial roles in facilitating access to information, preserving cultural heritage, promoting digital literacy, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. It serves as a dynamic hub of learning, innovation, and community engagement, offering a wide range of services and resources to support futuristic lifelong learning and research opportunities. Additionally, it serves as repositories of historical records and primary sources, crucial for understanding the past and informing the present and future. It also provides the theoretical framework and practical tools for organising, managing, and retrieving information across various formats and platforms in Society 5.0.

By harnessing the collective expertise and resources of various stakeholders, the Information Science industry can drive positive change and contribute to the advancement of knowledge, scholarship, and practice in Society 5.0. In light of these considerations, the organisers of UNLISA 2025 extend an invitation for the submission of abstracts from all interested parties and stakeholders.
