Ways to give

Online Donations

The Unisa online donation platform, powered by Virtual Card Services, is a secure and convenient way to support the university. With this platform, you can make donations using your credit card securely, anytime, anywhere. You can choose to donate any amount you wish or select from the stipulated amounts on the system.

Regular or annual funding

The Unisa Foundation is largely responsible for securing regular funding to support the university’s core activities: teaching and learning, research and innovation, and community engagement and outreach programs. Our main sources of funding include local and international foundations, trusts, corporations, and individuals. We receive contributions in various forms, including cash and non-financial resources such as computers, books, equipment, and other material resources.

In-kind donations

The university also receives in-kind donations which can be in the form of a good or service through mutually beneficial arrangements with the donor.

Bequests

Bequests play a vital role in helping Unisa finance essential projects such as student bursaries, infrastructure, and research. They also assist the university in improving its services and maintaining its position as a leader in distance education.

A charitable bequest is a gift made to a charity upon your death through a will or trust. You can make a bequest to Unisa for a specific amount or a percentage of your estate. You may designate the gift to support a purpose or program at the University of South Africa (Unisa) that holds personal significance to you, or you can leave its use to the university’s discretion.

Major gifts

Major gifts play a crucial role in enabling Unisa to provide significant support to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students, attract top researchers from South Africa, Africa, and beyond, and strengthen research and teaching across all disciplines. Additionally, major gifts help preserve the university’s heritage and ensure its continued excellence.

Endowments

Large-scale private support, particularly when it comes in the form of an endowment, allows the university to make long-term plans in terms of its students, staff and infrastructure.

Giving to Unisa from the USA

In the United States, Unisa operates through the University of South Africa Foundation, providing an efficient mechanism for supporters to contribute to the university. This foundation complies with not-for-profit regulations in the State of New York, and contributions are tax-deductible for individuals and organizations based in the USA.

Giving to Unisa from the UK

The University of South Africa is also registered as a beneficiary affiliate under the UK Fund for Charities (UKFC) to maximize support in pound-denominated income. The UKFC is a UK-registered charity/non-profit organization that supports charitable organizations and universities globally. In the United Kingdom, donations to UK-registered charities from UK taxpayers are eligible for the UK government’s Gift Aid scheme, which can increase donations by 25%.
