This course is developed against the history of colonialism in Africa, the people of Africa being dragged into the 'Cold War' rivalries between powerful nations in the world, globalisation, and the current reemergence of international polarisations that demand the people of Africa to maintain non-alignment, choose sides and to maintain African agency in the interest of the people of Africa.
Breaking away from the dominant view that states in Africa are 'collapsed states' and/or 'fragile states' that cause harmful impacts on the other African states and the world, this course follows an Afrocentric perceptive that exerts that the security challenges of Africans do not always originate from national governance deficiencies only, but also post-colonial insecurity as a making of Africa's colonisation and decolonisation processes. In this regard, scholars agree on the need for human security, which is people-centred, meaning that it is security concerned with the well-being of people in a society, the freedom to exercise their choices, access to market and social opportunities, and whether they live in conflict or peace.
There is an acute awareness of indigenous approaches to secure the well-being of the people of Africa. Securing societies and the communities that are the building blocks of such societies is in the hands of social and political movements, especially the youth, with Africans at the forefront to prevent the outcome of top-down politics that only exacerbates corruption and social upheaval.
