Template talk:Intersect categories
Great template. When does it run ? --Foroa (talk) 06:13, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
- Every once in a while when I notice some requests and fire up the bot (like now). I'm not running on regular intervals yet (should probably make it more vandal proof first). Multichill (talk) 08:09, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
- Seems only to execute the first intersect invocation but removes all requests when executed. See Category:Mangoes from Fruit and Spice Park. --Foroa (talk) 08:46, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
- That behavior is by design. The intersection is not really intended to be used for filtering of overcategorization. If you want to remove multiple categories it's probably better to use replace.py Multichill (talk) 11:00, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Could you clarify the behavior described above? Specifically: If there are multiple {{Intersect categories}} on a destination category, will they all be processed? For example, I've put following on Category:Secondary schools in Hong Kong:
- {{intersect categories|High schools and secondary schools|Education in Hong Kong}}
- {{intersect categories|High schools and secondary schools|Schools in Hong Kong}}
- {{intersect categories|High schools and secondary schools in China|Education in Hong Kong}}
- {{intersect categories|High schools and secondary schools in China|Schools in Hong Kong}}
- {{intersect categories|Secondary schools|Education in Hong Kong}}
- {{intersect categories|Secondary schools|Schools in Hong Kong}}
The intent here should be obvious enough: I'm attempting to "drill down" the category on any high schools that are categorized in a parent category. (Category:Secondary schools is a redirected category that has not been cleared out yet and may contain some media still, which is why it still exists in the list.) Will this work? I don't intend to try to synthesize guesses based on far-flung overcategorization here; my intent is to intersect into a specific destination category that may not have existed at the time previous editors added categories. (When I was cleaning out redirected high school categories, I added a lot of countries and U.S. states, for example.) --Closeapple (talk) 01:30, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
Subcategories!
[edit]Hi guys, I updated the bot which works on this template to also look into subcategories.
- First field no recursion
- Second field 3 levels of recursion
I didn't do recursion on both fields because that makes the query explode. For example Category:Ponds in Cornwall was tagged with {{Intersect categories|Ponds in England|Cornwall}}. The bot will also look into subcategories of Category:Cornwall so these kind of files are found now. Be careful not to switch parameters because than it won't look in the right subcategories. Multichill (talk) 12:10, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
- Just so I know I'm interpreting that diff correctly: The bot only removes the second category if it's the direct category given in the second parameter, in contrast to the second parameter's subcategories, which are not removed, right? --Closeapple (talk) 18:33, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, you're right. The bot only removes categories passed to it. Subcategories are never removed. Multichill (talk) 19:17, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
- Cool. Maybe eventually I will even like subcategories by region ;) -- User:Docu at 12:14, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
- Once Commons:Usability_issues_and_ideas#Displaying_location_on_file_description_pages works, maybe it could use that as input. Currently, the main risk is that the structure 3 levels down is problematic. -- User:Docu at 07:48, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Still active?
[edit]I have some stuff in Birds of Tanzania that would be nice to re-sort (the species subcategories with presently one file only will receive it) Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 23:13, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
- THANKS! Now there's 300 photos less in there... only 275 to sort :D
- BTW you might want to add a function that automatically places all categories using this template into a "non-topical/index" category (like "Duplicates" or "Categories requiring temporary diffusion"). This way, whenever you think ablot running the bot you can easily check whether there are intersect missions scheduled. Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 21:32, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
Reactivate
[edit]Someone should reassign these tasks to another bot, otherwise I'll go ahead and change this template to just be informational rather than indicate any bot activity. For the time being I'll do the latter. @Multichill @Multichill2 OmegaFallon (talk) 23:15, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
- @OmegaFallon: You might be able to get it to work again based on PetScan. Multichill (talk) 16:44, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
- Not sure how I would do that. I'm afraid I don't know much of anything about bots. OmegaFallon (talk) 16:46, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
