Fire incident at Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Building(WMM), Muckleneuk Campus

Dear Unisans

At about 01:00 this morning, 21st December 2022, I was notified that Block B building of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela at our Muckleneuk Campus caught fire. I immediately went to campus to join the Unisa team present at the scene. The team on site was led by Mr Feresane Sibeko of Facilities Management and Mr Victor Khethani of Protection Services. The team had already called the City of Tshwane Fire Department. The latter managed to contain the fire. At the time of the incident, no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire and extent of the damage will form part of the investigations. In line with established protocols, the university will continue working with the City of Tshwane Fire Department and SAPS on these investigations. The investigation report will guide management on the next steps.

I have decided that the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela not be open for access today and staff working in this building will be communicated to.

I would like to convey my gratitude to Mr Victor Khethani of Protection Services and his team, Mr Feresane Sibeko and his team, and other Unisans who responded to the call to action from early this morning.

For further enquiries on this matter, please contact Ms Khanya Mahlare at mahlajs@unisa.ac.za.

Prof Puleng LenkaBula
