The Ekurhuleni Regional Service Centre’s Counselling Unit (which forms part of Unisa’s Gauteng Region), in collaboration with the Student Administration and Registration Unit, attended a career expo organised by the community of Mayfield-Daveyton at Assemblies of God. The event targeted prospective students, Grade 8 to 12 learners, and community organisations. Unisa was ably represented by facilitators Fhatuwani Makahane, Kgomotso Nyamakazi, and Abongile Sinono, who led the information-sharing sessions.
The primary purpose of the career expo was to engage with the Mayfield community, including various local NGOs, to discuss development and enhance skills and knowledge for lifelong learning. Unisa facilitators shared crucial information about the 2024 second semester and ongoing undergraduate and postgraduate applications, dates, and the diverse qualifications offered by the university. They also provided insight into admission requirements, open distance e-learning (ODeL), and critical services available to students. Additionally, community members were informed about how to participate in Unisa’s community engagement and scholarship projects at the Ekurhuleni RSC.
The target audience included learners aspiring to study at Unisa, community members interested in skills development, and individuals seeking support and advisory services for prospective and registered students. The event aimed to offer second-chance opportunities for higher education to those who could not afford it due to personal circumstances and to promote lifelong learning for continuous development. Attendance met and exceeded expectations, reflecting the community’s strong interest in higher education.
Makahane, Nyamakazi, and Sinono were grateful to the Mayfield community for the warm reception and active participation. “We deeply appreciate the opportunity to engage with such a vibrant and eager audience,” said Makahane.
