Nomfundo Mbatha was born and raised in the Kingdom of Eswatini and later moved to Barberton in Mpumalanga. She is the Unisa Deputy Secretary of the Mpumalanga Regional Student Representative Council, the National Executive Committee (NEC) member of the South African Union of Students (SAUS) and also the Secretary General of the Unisa College of Education Association – where her key functions incorporate the administration and operation of the organisations.
On 18 October 2022, Mbatha graduated with a Bachelor of Education, Intermediate and Senior Phase, joining Unisa’s illustrious alumni. She shares some of the challenges she encountered: “I had to finance my studies while juggling motherhood and leading student movements.” Moreover, she was not spared the obstacles of being a woman leading and managing large and dynamic organisations.
However, as a student leader, Mbatha says her vision is to create an environment where students can be creative. “I aim to enable an environment where students are at liberty to learn and know that it is okay to make mistakes and continue to learn from them,” she concludes.
