Groundwork for Unisa’s 2023 SRC elections

Unisa’s Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Advocate Saul Makama, hosted an interactive and informative session on the 20th of April with Unisa students and student organisations to discuss the upcoming Student Representative Council (SRC) election. The meeting took place on MS Teams.

The primary purpose of the meeting was to introduce student organisations and structures within the university to the 2023 SRC election project.

The SRC election campaign is set to achieve the following objectives:

-        To familiarise the stakeholders with the formal registration requirements and application process for qualifying to participate in the elections.

-        To inform stakeholders about the relevant constitutional and policy matters for successful registration and application.

-        To enable stakeholders to engage and get clarity from the IEC.

Presenting at the event, Makama shared that student organisations or structures interested in the election should register with the IEC and provide the following:

-        The constitution of the student organisation or structure.

-        The list of its executive committee members with contact details.

-        A handwritten list of 100 (minimum) registered students with their student numbers and signatures appended supporting the student organisation.

-        A signed declaration of good conduct.

The applications for Unisa’s SRC elections will take place from 1 – 31 May 2023.

For any inquiries, interested students of structures should email the Chairperson of the IEC at makamsp@unisa.ac.za and the srcelections@unisa.ac.za  before the closing date.
