In memoriam: Mandla Mabuza

It is with great sadness that Unisa learned of the passing of Mandla Mabuza, one of the founding members and a former leader of the university’s National Student Representative Council (NSRC), and former Deputy Director-General in the Department of Public Works.

Mabuza was a highly decorated and accomplished leader of youth and students in South Africa. He served as President of the Unisa Pretoria Regional SRC in 1995, and was elected Deputy President External for the NSRC in 1996.

Importantly, he was the national President of the South African Students’ Congress between 1999 and 2001. This was at a very crucial moment in the history of higher education in South Africa when the size and shape of the higher education sector were debated and decided.

Mandla was also a chorister and opera singer, and represented Unisa and South Africa at international competitions.

A memorial service, hosted by the NSRC at Unisa, took place on 02 March.
