From 24 until 28 February 2025, the Unisa Midlands Region held library orientation and training sessions at the Rustenburg Hub and regional service centres. The objective of the orientation was to promote library services available to students.

Phendani Mongameli, a library assistant, addressed students and pointed out that registered students need to have their access cards with them when they visit libraries. He outlined the procedures for borrowing, picking up, returning and renewing library books, as well as requesting online resources.

Mongameli added that students can return books at any Unisa office or at the designated public libraries with which the region has partnered. He encouraged students to return borrowed books promptly using the automated RFID book return machines, thereby avoiding library fines. He also encouraged students living with disabilities to notify the libraries of their needs in order to obtain access to the disability rooms.
Takaonekwa Chidondondo completed his National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at Unisa. He is currently employed as a junior engineer at a mine and is registered for a Bachelor of Engineering Technology Honours in Mechanical Engineering.

Chidondondo highlighted that although studying at Unisa, a distance-learning university, is challenging, yet possible to achieve success. He credited his academic progress to the support of lecturers, access to a computer lab and library, connections with other students and the availability of student support services. “Studying through distance learning is convenient for people who are employed. However, time management, dedication and self-discipline are important to make me succeed”, he said.
