Monday motivation: Fikile Mngomezulu talks studying at Unisa

What did you study at Unisa?

I studied BCOM as a full time student and participated in a lot of structures including Unisa Choir, Unisa SRC, Unisa Finance Faculty committee and many more.  I assisted with registrations, student counselling and also worked in the Library during my studies. My BCOMM was completed in 2002.  I completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting Sciences and graduated in 2006.  Later I did my MBL and graduated in 2013.

What did you like about studying at Unisa?

A lot of things apart from having reputable degree.  Working as a group is one of the required skills from corporate and that’s the key skill you attain from Unisa.

I subsequently attained my leadership degree.  It was not just a degree but a strength shocker. I could not have done any better leadership course in any other institution.

What did you dislike about studying at Unisa?

Very little during my time, as I was part of Unisa transformation.  It was one of my responsibilities to ensure that every area which required improvement was addressed.

I fail to understand the queues I see when I’m driving past.  I don’t feel more is done to educate kids on e-registrations etc.  I really feel it’s unnecessary and more still needs to be done.

Why did you choose your particular field of study?

I’m a finance person by nature it was on those grounds that I chose BCOMM.  As soon as I climbed the ladder at Corporate I then felt it necessary that I strengthen my leadership qualification hence my MBL.

How did your studies fit into your working hours?

Well, initially I was a full time student but later I was very flexible.  I was so used to the concept and mastered the skill. It was challenging but never impossible. Planning was critical in balancing work and studies, especially when you are married with kids. I had to prioritise and I did my MBL during a record period.  This included taking time off from work to attend compulsory classes at the SBL in Midrand.
