Now you can shape your wardrobe with the Unisa brand in the fairest Cape

The Unisa Shop in the Cape Town Regional Centre opened on 22 September 2017. The event was attended by Dr Keith Jacobs, Regional Director of the Unisa Western Cape Region, colleagues from the regional office, members of the Alumni Association Committee of Western Cape, students and friends.

According to Frankie Mojapelo, Deputy Director of Development and Special Projects at Unisa, the launch of the shop in Cape Town has been a long time coming. When checking his records, he realised that some of the earlier correspondence about the establishment of the shop dated back to 2011.

The first shop opened at the Pretoria Main Campus in 2008 to sell Unisa branded products. To date, three other shops are currently operating in Polokwane, Sunnyside and the Durban Learning Centre.

“With the annual turnover of the shop standing at just over R10 million, coupled with reserves of over R6 million, it means we not only define fashion and shape your wardrobe but we also contribute significantly towards student employment opportunities and student bursaries at Unisa,” said Mojapelo.

The #FeesMustFall movement started raising the alarm over a few years ago about student funding needs, which are much greater than can be fathomed. A stark reality is the ever-growing need for funding for bursaries, which has received the much needed cash injections from the various quarters of the university. “Soon, the shop will transfer R3 million generated from its income towards this cause. I believe when you support the shop you indirectly contribute towards fellow students’ financial support,” said Mojapelo.

The #ShapeMyFuture, another vigorous donations campaign, launched during the month of September, which seeks to make special appeals to our current students, alumni and friends to consider contributing to student funding at Unisa. The campaign represents Unisa’s awareness of its social responsibility to service humanity.

A donation of a minimum amount of R61 can help fill university coffers. Mojapelo thanked the regional colleagues in the communication and marketing department for volunteering their services and assisting with fittings for the shop. The Cape Town Shop can be located at the student atrium, on the first floor of the Cape Town Campus.
