The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children is a worldwide campaign opposing violence against women and children. The campaign takes place every year from 25 November to 10 December.
As part of the campaign, Unisa will be hosting its second Unisa dialogue on gender-based violence, with the theme Raising the curtain on human trafficking. The event is organised by Unisa’s Employee Relations and Wellness Directorate in the Human Resources Department, which is under the leadership of Health and Wellness Manager in the HIV/AIDS Section, Ms Vicky Malefo.
Talking to Unisa Radio, Ms Malefo explained briefly what her department entails. She said that it has two wings, one for primary health-care services and the other for the co-ordination of the institutional programme on HIV/AIDS. “Our dialogue addresses itself to women empowerment and gender-based violence and digs deeper to address sexual assault,” she said.
The programme includes prominent speakers, like Unisa’s Acting Dean of Students, Ms Irene Mohasoa; Head of Unisa’s Institute of Gender Studies, Prof Deirdre Byrne; and the CEO of People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA), Ms Nhlanhla Mokwena, to name just a few. There will also be performing artists to lighten up the event.
The dialogue will be hosted on Thursday 24 November 2016, in the Senate Hall, Theo van Wijk Building on the Unisa Muckleneuk Campus. Students and staff are encouraged to attend and learn more about this social ill.
