SRC treasurers convene to strategise on a range of issues

Earlier this year, the Treasurer-General of Unisa’s Student Representative Council (SRC) convened a Financial Committee meeting at the Cape Town Campus in Parow, bringing together regional treasurers from eight regions. The focus of the meeting was multifaceted, addressing the state of campus infrastructure and student equipment, and the efficiency of the SRC offices. Attendees also strategised on expanding the student debt campaign, a crucial initiative aimed at alleviating the financial burden faced by students across universities.

SRC members attended an insightful and successful meeting

During the meeting, the Treasurer-General and regional treasurers conducted a thorough assessment of campus facilities, including furniture and equipment used by students and at SRC offices. This evaluation was essential in ensuring that the operational effectiveness of the SRC is not compromised by inadequate resources. By maintaining well-equipped campuses, the SRC can provide better support to students, fostering an environment where they can focus on their academic pursuits without the added stress of inadequate resources.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to reflecting on the performance of the student debt campaign conducted across five regions. This campaign has been instrumental in assisting students who have incurred debts through the university’s system, particularly those with Acknowledgment of Debt (AOD) agreements. However, the SRC recognises that more needs to be done to expand the reach and impact of this campaign.

The SRC also acknowledged the importance of securing additional sponsorships to support the campaign. The treasurers discussed various strategies for engaging with potential sponsors, including corporations, alumni, and other stakeholders who have a vested interest in the success of students. Additionally, the SRC plans to collaborate with other universities to share best practices and implement successful fundraising models that have been proven to work in different contexts.

Looking ahead, the SRC treasurers are focused on budgeting for the upcoming year, with a robust agenda of activities designed to improve student life and engagement. These initiatives will be tailored to address the specific needs of students, ensuring that the SRC’s efforts are aligned with their primary mission of serving the student body.
