The Unisa Regional Student Representative Council (RSRC) in the Western Cape have embarked on a journey to be part of the formation of the National SRC’s Forum: Western Cape, which aims to plough back positively into communities at Youth Information Days under the theme “Building community-based student activism”.
The programmes and interventions primarily look at guiding learners and youth aged 17 to 25 to make informed decisions about their futures academically and career wise.
The first Youth Information Day took place in Langa on 2 December 2023. This event focused on assisting students with applications to higher learning institutions and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) while they were still waiting for their matric results to be released in January 2024.
The second round of the Youth Information Day campaign took place from 22 to 26 January 2024. The programme started in Kraaifontein, followed by Khayelitsha on the second day. The third and fourth days were in Gugulethu and Mitchells Plain respectively. The final day of the programme was in Stellenbosch.
At each of the venues, the SRC’s Forum helped 2023 matriculants with late applications, assisting those who had missed the original application dates.
Unisa also extended its application period, which was the perfect opportunity to market undersubscribed qualifications. Deputy Chairperson of the RSRC, Liyema Makubalo, was present on all days of the campaign. Liyema was deployed by the RSRC to assist with active student queries and the application process.
The Youth Information Day initiative will continue throughout 2024 and help spread various sources of information to the youth in communities.
