“Unisa has contributed to my journey as a storyteller”

During a bustling graduation ceremony in Durban, among the graduates, one student sat quietly, unnoticed by those around her. Little did they know that the unassuming individual was none other than the talented actress, voice-over artist, workshop facilitator, and public administrator, Tshireletso Nkoane. Graduating with a BA in Human and Social Sciences from Unisa added another dimension to her impressive list of achievements.

While nurturing her successful acting career, Nkoane never relinquished her burning desire to pursue an education. Thus, she sought an institution that would understand the demands of her profession and offer sufficient flexibility to balance both pursuits. Unisa was the perfect fit. Her chosen field of study aligned with her passion for storytelling and using art forms to address social issues on and off the screen.

Nkoane has always believed storytelling can be a powerful force for positive change and social entrepreneurship. She recognised the need to equip herself with the right tools to merge her performance skills with social engagement and philanthropy. Unisa provided her with a platform to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills, empowering her to approach storytelling innovatively, effectively, and with economic benefits in mind.

She explains that studying at Unisa offered her numerous advantages. The freedom to create her study plans allowed her to adapt to her ever-changing schedule. With online tutors readily available, help was just a click away, no matter where she was. The university's library facilities, accessible in every province, ensured she had the needed resources.

However, like many students during the COVID-19 pandemic, she faced challenges, especially during the lockdown. Balancing family responsibilities while studying proved difficult, but her determination and passion for education kept her going.

Reflecting on her journey, Nkoane shares invaluable advice for students aspiring to achieve their dreams. She emphasises the importance of pursuing education for oneself and setting achievable goals. Breaking tasks into manageable sections and utilising online tools are crucial to success. Furthermore, she stresses the significance of community support and urges students to seek help when needed. "Distance learning does not necessarily mean isolated learning," she says.

With her Unisa degree, Nkoane is now equipped with skills that transcend her artistic career. She can think innovatively and collaboratively in the business side of her profession, opening new avenues for growth and impact.

Congratulating Unisa on its 150th birthday, she acknowledges the institution's vital role in providing affordable education to thousands in Africa and beyond. She says: "Unisa's commitment to online and distance learning has transformed lives, including my own, contributing to my journey as a storyteller."
