Unisa East London hosts memorable Autumn graduations

The Unisa East London Autumn graduation ceremonies recently took place at the Abbotsford Christian Centre, where 747 qualifications were conferred over four sessions; among those, four doctoral degrees (PhD) from the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, the College of Human Sciences, and the College of Education. The theme for this year's graduation ceremonies was 150 years of shaping higher education to commemorate the university's 150^th anniversary. These graduation ceremonies highlighted not only the resilience of Unisa over the past centenary but also every graduate's resilience, hard work and dedication.

In his address, Acting Vice-Chancellor at the time, Professor Khehla Ndlovu, said, "As graduates in 2023, you will notice a feature in your certificate that marks the university's 150^th anniversary." He added, "Throughout the decades, we have repeatedly proven that we are committed to the fundamental core mandate of teaching, learning, research but more importantly engaged scholarship." Among the 747 graduates, an inmate accompanied by correctional services officials graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Community Development. A testimony that Unisa remains committed to making education accessible to all.

Delivering the Chancellor's address, Dr Moses Hlongoane, Acting Executive Dean of the College of Accounting Sciences, said, "Always remember that challenges and difficulties are inevitable but do not be discouraged; instead, view them as opportunities to grow and learn. Be persistent, focused and never stop learning."

Chairperson of Council, James Maboa, also attended the East London graduations. Before the graduation ceremony, the Regional Director of the Eastern Cape Region, Motale Nkgoang, gave him a tour of the East London Regional Hub, where he experienced the fantastic facilities, including the learning centres, computer labs and office space.

Chief Mthuthuzeli Makinana and Prince Xolisa Cibi from The Royal House of Traditional Leaders also graced the ceremonies, making it a highlight for the local community members and graduates.
