Unisa KZN Region hosts the Accounting and Law Professions Day

The Unisa KwaZulu-Natal Counselling and Career Development Unit recently hosted the Accounting and Law Professions Day in Durban and Pietermaritzburg. The event aimed to equip Unisa's accounting and law graduates with the essential skills and knowledge to thrive in their chosen careers.

The event aligned with Unisa's institutional strategy for 2023, which emphasises the enhancement of student graduateness. It supports the strategic goal of the Directorate of Counselling and Career Development of cultivating collaborations with public and private enterprises. These partnerships are crucial in contributing to engaged scholarship and global impact.

The day was an invaluable opportunity for students and recruiters. It provided a platform for forging connections that could lead to promising job opportunities. The discussions revolved around a range of opportunities, including vacation work, articles of clerkship, graduate internship programmes, and bursary programmes. 

Students had the opportunity to explore various career paths within law and accounting to help them make informed decisions about their future trajectories. Additionally, students had a chance to connect with representatives from accounting and law firms, setting the stage for building invaluable networks that are instrumental in their careers. Interacting with industry experts was another highlight, offering students insights into the latest trends and developments in their chosen fields. The event featured sessions where seasoned professionals shared their experiences, providing valuable guidance on their path to success.

The Accounting and Law Professions Day served as a bridge to job openings in various companies and organisations, including the public and private sectors. Building connections with potential employers is crucial for adequate career preparation, and the event facilitated these connections. Students received specialised guidance tailored to help them navigate their career paths successfully once they completed their qualifications. The event exposed students to local and international job opportunities, broadening their horizons. It also emphasised the significance and process of professional registration, a fundamental requirement in both accounting and law.

The success of the Accounting and Law Professions Day was evident, with more than 120 students participating in the exhibition and presentations held in Durban. Over 60 students attended the event at the Pietermaritzburg campus.

The Accounting and Law Professions Day stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of Unisa and its partners in preparing the next generation of accounting and law professionals. By nurturing these budding talents, events like these play a pivotal role in shaping the future of these professions in South Africa.
