Unisa alumni in Gqeberha come together to create new networking opportunities

A Unisa alumni event held in Gqeberha on Friday, 17 March, brought together graduates of the university to connect, network and explore ways to collaborate on common goals.

The event was opened by Morale Ngoang, Unisa Eastern Cape Regional Director, who welcomed the alumni and encouraged them to take advantage of the networking opportunities to establish more cohesion between all Unisa alumni.

Ngoang emphasised the importance of building a strong alumni community and working in cooperation with the regional office to reach their shared goals. "As Unisa alumni, you are part of a proud and accomplished community," he said. "The regional office is here to support you and provide resources to help you succeed in your personal and professional lives."

The event was addressed by Frankie Mojapelo, Acting Director of the Unisa Foundation and Alumni Relations, who spoke about the University's 150-year celebrations and its plans for the future.

Mojapelo highlighted the illustrious history of Unisa, which has been a pioneer in distance education in Africa for 150 years. He also outlined the university's plans for the future, including the identification of catalytic niche areas that will position Unisa as a leading institution in various fields.

"We are proud of our heritage and excited about our future," said Mojapelo.  He thanked the alumni for their continued support and ambassadorship of the university, adding that they are an important part of Unisa’s history and future.

Alumni members in attendance were inspired by Mojapelo's words and expressed their enthusiasm for the university's future plans. They discussed various ways in which they could contribute to Unisa's growth and success as ambassadors of the institution.

Members expressed their desire for more networking opportunities, as a platform for networking would be beneficial in their quest to connect with fellow alumni and build relationships that could lead to new job opportunities and business ventures.

The event was also an opportunity for the newly elected chapter convenor, Yonela Skotoyi, to share her vision for the Gqeberha alumni chapter. Skotoyi emphasised the need for alumni to focus on community engagement and to work together to increase the employability of Unisa graduates.

"I think it's great that the alumni chapter is focusing on employability and community engagement," said one attendee. "It is important for us to give back to the community that supported us during our studies."

Overall, the event was a great success, with alumni leaving with a renewed sense of pride and commitment to their shared goals. As Unisa continues to celebrate its 150-year history and plans for the future, events like this will play an important role in fostering collaboration and building stronger connections between graduates.
