Featured picture candidates Featured picture candidates are images that the community will vote on, to determine whether or not they will be highlighted as some of the finest on Commons. This page lists the candidates to become featured pictures. The picture of the day images are selected from featured pictures. Old candidates for Featured pictures are listed here. Formal thingsNominatingGuidelines for nominatorsPlease read the complete guidelines before nominating. This is a summary of what to look for when submitting and reviewing FP candidates:
Artworks, illustrations, and historical documentsThere are many different types of non-photographic media, including engravings, watercolors, paintings, etchings, and various others. Hence, it is difficult to set hard-and-fast guidelines. However, generally speaking, works can be divided into three types: Those that can be scanned, those that must be photographed, and those specifically created to illustrate a subject. Works that must be photographed include most paintings, sculptures, works too delicate or too unique to allow them to be put on a scanner, and so on. For these, the requirements for photography, below, may be mostly followed; however, it should be noted that photographs which cut off part of the original painting are generally not considered featurable. Works that may be scanned include most works created by processes that allow for mass distribution − for instance, illustrations published with novels. For these, it is generally accepted that a certain amount of extra manipulation is permissible to remove flaws inherent to one copy of the work, since the particular copy – of which hundreds, or even thousands of copies also exist – is not so important as the work itself. Works created to serve a purpose include diagrams, scientific illustrations, and demonstrations of contemporary artistic styles. For these, the main requirement is that they serve their purpose well. Provided the reproduction is of high quality, an artwork generally only needs one of the following four things to be featurable:
Digital restorations must also be well documented. An unedited version of the image should be uploaded locally, when possible, and cross-linked from the file description page. Edit notes should be specified in detail, such as "Rotated and cropped. Dirt, scratches, and stains removed. Histogram adjusted and colors balanced." PhotographsOn the technical side, we have focus, exposure, composition, movement control and depth of field.
On the graphic elements we have shape, volume, color, texture, perspective, balance, proportion, noise, etc.
You will maximise the chances of your nominations succeeding if you read the complete guidelines before nominating. Video and audioPlease nominate videos, sounds, music, etc. at Commons:Featured media candidates. Set nominationsIf a group of images are thematically connected in a direct and obvious way, they can be nominated together as a set. A set should fall under one of the following types:
Simple tutorial for new usersAdding a new nominationIf you believe that you have found or created an image that could be considered valuable, with appropriate name, quality, image description, categories and licensing, then do the following. Step 1: copy the image name into this box, after the text already present in the box, for example, Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Your image filename.jpg. Then click on the "create new nomination" button. All single files: For renominations, simply add /2 after the filename. For example, Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Foo.jpg/2
All set nomination pages should begin "Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/", e.g. "Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/My Nomination".
Step 3: manually insert a link to the created page at the top of Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list: Click here, and add the following line to the TOP of the nominations list:
Galleries and FP categories: Please add a gallery page and section heading from the list at Commons FP galleries. Write the code as Page name#Section heading. For example: Optional: if you are not the creator of the image, please notify them using Note: Do not add an 'Alternative' image when you create a nomination. Selecting the best image is part of the nomination process. Alternatives are for a different crop or post-processing of the original image, or a closely related image from the same photo session (limited to 1 per nomination), if they are suggested by voters. VotingEditors whose accounts have at least 10 days and 50 edits can vote. Everybody can vote for their own nominations. Anonymous (IP) votes are not allowed. You may use the following templates:
You may indicate that the image has no chance of success with the template reason - ~~~~, where reason explains why the image is clearly unacceptable as a FP. The template can only be used when there are no support votes other than the one from the nominator. A well-written review helps participants (photographers, nominators and reviewers) improve their skills by providing insight into the strengths and weaknesses of a picture. Explain your reasoning, especially when opposing a candidate (which has been carefully selected by the author/nominator). English is the most widely understood language on Commons, but any language may be used in your review. A helpful review will often reference one or more of the criteria listed above. Unhelpful reasons for opposing include:
Remember also to put your signature (~~~~). Featured picture delisting candidatesOver time, featured picture standards change. It may be decided that for some pictures which were formerly "good enough", this is no longer the case. This is for listing an image which you believe no longer deserves to be a featured picture. For these, vote:
This can also be used for cases in which a previous version of an image was promoted to FP, but a newer version of the image has been made and is believed to be superior to the old version, e.g. a newly edited version of a photo or a new scan of a historical image. In particular, it is not intended for replacing older photos of a particular subject with newer photos of the same subject, or in any other case where the current FP and the proposed replacement are essentially different images. For these nominations, vote:
If you believe that some picture no longer meets the criteria for FP, you can nominate it for delisting, copying the image name into this box, after the text already present in the box: In the new delisting nomination page just created you should include:
After that, you have to manually insert a link to the created page at the top of Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list. As a courtesy, leave an informative note on the talk page(s) of the original creator, uploader(s), and nominator with a link to the delisting candidate. can be used for this purpose. Featured picture candidate policyGeneral rules
Featuring and delisting rulesA candidate will become a featured picture in compliance with following conditions:
The delisting rules are the same as those for FPs, with voting taking place over the same time period. The rule of the 5th day is applied to delisting candidates that have received no votes to delist, other than that of the proposer, by day 5. The FPCBot handles the vote counting and closing in most cases, current exceptions are candidates containing multiple versions of the image as well as FPXed and withdrawn nominations. Any experienced user may close the requests not handled by the bot. For instructions on how to close nominations, see Commons:Featured picture candidates/What to do after voting is finished. Also note that there is a manual review stage between when the bot has counted the votes and before the nomination is finally closed by the bot; this manual review can be done by any user familiar with the voting rules. Above all, be politePlease don't forget that the image you are judging is somebody's work. Avoid using phrases like "it looks terrible" and "I hate it". If you must oppose, please do so with consideration. Also remember that your command of English might not be the same as someone else's. Choose your words with care. Happy judging… and remember… all rules can be broken. See also

Support - Those horses appear to have been hoofing it. Looks like some minor motion blur on the foremost horse. Good shot, though I preferred your Union image. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 01:03, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- Moving horses are a challenge, much less six of them, but the riders interested me. I wanted to do something a little out of the ordinary for FP, where static images tend to predominate, including in my own shots. Acroterion (talk) 01:08, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- I know! I tried some jousting photography... can't imagine getting six horses at once, all at a gallop. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 01:22, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- Even with the slow-moving horse in the other FP candidate, one hoof is a little blurred. And different parts of a moving horse go in different directions, quickly, while the rider's doing something else. These weren't fully galloping, but it makes little difference if it's a trot, canter or gallop. Nearly every FP we have of horses is static, and many of those few that are moving have blur somewhere. - Acroterion (talk) 01:26, 27 June 2025 (UTC)

Info created by Annemarie Schwarzenbach, restored, uploaded, and nominated by Yann
Info Annemarie Schwarzenbach and Ella Maillart went from Geneva to Kabul in 1939 with a Ford. Westerners travelling to Afghanistan by car was already something very unusual at the time, not to mention two women alone. This amazing journey is narrated in Maillart's book The Cruel Way. More information available at [1]. We are lucky that the Swiss National Library released many images by Schwarzenbach in the public domain. Torkham is the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, also known as Khyber Pass.

- the peculiarity is found in the clean cut of the rock, which from some research I deduce is due to natural erosion. It not belongs to the Asteraceae, which are a member of the order Asterales, as incorrectly stated above ("Featured pictures/Plants/Asterales#Family : Asteraceae") --Llez (talk) 11:01, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
Comment Thank you Llez for giving the info about the right gallery. Hi Heylenny, and welcome to the FPC. You are off to a bit of a rough start since your photo lacked some of the basic info needed for a FPC nomination. Some kind users have helped you with species and some categories. I have fixed up the file page a bit for you and added the right gallery. These are things you should have done before making this nom, please remember that in the future. --Cart (talk) 15:48, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
Oppose Sorry but this image does not give me the wow an FP should have. The phone camera can't handle such details well and the petals look fused into one big ring. The file name is also very bare-boned, it should be something less ambiguous. As a "newbie" here, it's reccommended that you first nominate your photos at COM:QIC to get a feel for what is expected. --Cart (talk) 15:54, 26 June 2025 (UTC)

- To be honest, I'm not sure the quality of the flower is good enough for QIC either, but it's a very good place for fist-timers to get feedback on their photos and learn how to examine photos the same way we do. Support I think this photo deserves a little bit of love (or at least some attention ;–). The size/resolution is not giant and not everything is tack sharp, but we all know how difficult it is to get a good photo from a concert. The compo and the colours are very good; no unfortunate crop of an arm or leg, no irritating elements, etc. And for a smartphone the quality is very good: even at pixel level this image looks like a real photo, not like the usual overcooked mash traditionally delivered by phones. – Aristeas (talk) 08:57, 27 June 2025 (UTC)

Info Black skipjack tuna (Euthynnus lineatus), San José del Cabo, Baja California, Mexico. E. lineatus can be found in the Eastern tropical Pacific from San Simeon, California to northern Peru and the Galápagos Islands and can reach up to 92 centimetres (36 in) and a weight up to 11.6 kilograms (26 lb). It shows opportunistic predatory behavior, sharing its feeding pattern with other tunas, as well as dolphins and other large predatory fish, with which it also competes. Like other tunas, the fish breaths through ram ventilation, so it must continue swimming to intake oxygen. Note: surprisingly there are no FPs of the order Scombriformes on Commons, that contains 16 families (like butterfishes, mackerels or tunas) and 287 species. c/u/n by Poco a poco (talk) 18:29, 25 June 2025 (UTC)

Neutral Great compo but too much noise Poco a poco (talk) 19:26, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
- Chris, I assume you underexposed the image to protect the highlights, and then lifted the shadows in post? I see you're using Lightroom: in my experience, the AI Denoise function (under the 'Detail' tab in the latest version, or part of the 'Enhance' function in earlier versions) is great for these cases -- Julesvernex2 (talk) 20:40, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Julesvernex2; unfortunately the AI denoise function resulted in serious banding around the lights. I suspect it doesn't play nice with HDR, though it didn't blow the highlights from the window. I ended up pulling this through Photoshop and denoising the shadows there (if you check the history, it was worse). Unfortunately, I was handheld on this occasion, as the building had about a hundred people wandering the main floor. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 20:46, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
- Ah, it's an HDR, got tricked by the EXIF shutter speed! Indeed, I also had the same banding issue with HDR images. DXO's demosaicing doesn't have the same problem though: if you want, I can try to process the original Raw files and send you the DNGs. -- Julesvernex2 (talk) 20:54, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
- Unfortunately the CR3 files are gone; I had deleted them after making an HDR with no ghosts. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 21:00, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
- So this is one of the cases where Topaz DeNoise AI would be helpful, because unlike Adobe’s new raw image noise reduction and DxO’s DeepPrime it also works on TIFF/JPEG files. But it would have to be used with manual settings/masking, because only the dark areas need to be processed here, the window itself should not be changed. – Aristeas (talk) 08:42, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- That looks impressive! I'll have to have it on my wish list. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 10:55, 27 June 2025 (UTC)

Info A train picture not by Kabelleger! I love the colours in this picture. I once saw a description of steam locomotives 'puffing like tired dragons' and this photo conveys that impression better than anything else I've seen. I know the darker areas are a bit noisy but this isn't an easy shot and for a moving object I think it's fine, and quality issues are mitigated by the excellent composition. created by Domob – uploaded by Domob – nominated by Cmao20 -- Cmao20 (talk) 21:46, 23 June 2025 (UTC)

Oppose You made the nomination absolutely fine, don't worry about that at all. However unfortunately I can't support this one. It's not bad per sé and I think it is definitely a useful contribution to the project that illustrates the building well. But I don't think it compares well to others in the category. The sharpness is not there at full size, and also we would normally ask for perspective correction in a shot like this, so that the towers don't look like they are falling backwards. I also think it's a bit of a shame there are so many people in the image, but that isn't a deal breaker for me. Cmao20 (talk) 22:10, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
Oppose Well done nomination even though you are not an FPC regular. Unfortunately, I have to agree with Cmao20, although I don't mind people per se in architecture photos, just cut people. This photo is from 2011 when digital cameras just didn't have good enough sensors yet. If you want to nominate digital photos, a good tip is to select those made after 2016 when sensors got better. --Cart (talk) 22:28, 23 June 2025 (UTC)

Info White wooden house with a small beach and an old motorboat of Pettersson type in Norra Grundsund, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden.
- Even though much of the Swedish west coast is afflicted by tourism, there are places like this where little has changed. Houses that are renovated or replaced, stay true to the previous designs. Even the carefully preserved small motorboat is the same as some 80 years ago. The weather this close to Skagerrak is very harsh all through the year, and vegetation seldom grows taller than the nearest sheltering cliff. All by me, -- Cart (talk) 19:06, 23 June 2025 (UTC)

Oppose Zooming in to the leaves or almost any other part of the image it is just too blocky and undetailed to be FP. Sorry :( --Osmo Lundell hey 06:52, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
- Honestly not seeing any quality flaw here. The worst I can see is that the far left of the image is not quite as sharp as the rest, likely because the lens's edge sharpness is a little less. But even that looks well within acceptable limits to me. Can you tell me where you are seeing these issues Osmo Lundell? Cmao20 (talk) 02:40, 26 June 2025 (UTC)

Comment Hi ARABCREATOR7, the categories for this photo were a total mess, but I've cleared them up best I could for you and added a few other relevant ones. The date for the photo should not be the upload date, so I changed it to the date provided by the camera's Exif data. Since this is a studio photo, no exact location is required. I know this is an official photo, but it could be better edited in post-processing, it's a bit overexposed in the bright areas and a few other small things can be fixed. I've made a suggestion for you here. You can use it however you like (overwrite or upload). Best, --Cart (talk) 18:18, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
Oppose Mainly for the resolution: 2,761 × 1,981 for a camera which can give 4,928 × 3,280 pixels. Yann (talk) 18:55, 23 June 2025 (UTC)

Oppose I have a problem with the image quality, I had expected a good level of detail, it is rather noisy. I also have a problem with the item, but that's not a valid criteria to oppose Poco a poco (talk) 16:23, 24 June 2025 (UTC)
- TBH, I would consider the problem with the subject to be a reason to support, rather than oppose—an FP of him would mean the picture can be a POTD, where, in the caption, one could talk about his position, his politics, the reforms he has undertaken, and indeed the assassinations he has ordered, with a careful consideration of due weight according to reliable sources. Same goes for other political (and otherwise) figures. We must not conflate support for FP with endorsement of the subject. UnpetitproleX (Talk) 21:05, 24 June 2025 (UTC)
- The photos we promote here are primarily for encyclopedias and such works contains images of some pretty bad things too. We have a lot of them already, just look in the 'History' section. It can be very hard to look at some of these images and stay neutral as we should (trust me, I made the first free image of Kim Jong Un, a revolting task, but the image was needed for articles). But this is how it is to collect high quality images for the wiki work. It would look rather loop-sided if only the nice images were good and all the bad images also had bad quality. --Cart (talk) 00:49, 25 June 2025 (UTC)

- But Ahh! I see what you mean, I had accidentally inserted a second "Genus : Graphium" in the wrong place. Bad mistake, and thank you very much for making me aware that something was wrong. Much appreciated. I've removed the faulty place so the nom now points to the right section. I always have trouble spotting the difference between the words "Papilionoidea" and "Papilionidae". And Atudu, while you were right "species-wise", the sorting done by the FPCBot can only go to one specific heading (in this case 'Genus : Graphium') on one specific page (in this case 'Papilionoidea'), so I understand if it looks a bit weird when writing the name of the Genus right after the name of the Superfamily. And if you, Charles, have some other points to discuss about the Lepidoptera gallery pages, could you please post that on the FPC talk page, since I'm not the only one involved in the galleries. - The image of the boat refugee was promoted 20 years ago when this project was still very new and didn't have the stricter rules that have been applied since. Today it is preferred that we can see the original from some archive or museum page to verify it. This photo is from a site we can't access since it is on a restricted site and its archive is blacklisted as unsafe. Some photos also require restoration work, but this is so badly damaged by previous edits that it is beyond any such attempts. The boat refugee photo has its original grain in the image and has not undergone such severe edits along the way. Sorry, perhaps you can find a link to a good original that we can works from. --Cart (talk) 18:39, 23 June 2025 (UTC)

Info Lake Burdur is one of the important lakes of Turkey, but has been drying up rapidly in recent years and has shrunk by 50% today. Oppose Sorry, I'm not convinced of the sharpness of the whole image in higher resolution and especially of some very blurry parts. Metadata are also missing. Made by a smartphone? --Llez (talk) 09:12, 21 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Llez: thank you for your review. The bottom corners (right especially) is indeed not as sharp as the rest. This is a stitched panorama made from three raw TIFF images converted from raw digital negative photographs taken on an iPhone 15 Pro using the RawMAX settings. It obviously pales in comparison with the better but expensive latest digital cameras, which I don't have, but in my experience works as well (when used without zoom) as the older digital cameras that I have. On difficult remote treks such as these it is also more convenient to me, but there are limitations viz focal length etc. so I understand if the device is an issue. Weak oppose Sorry but not an outstanding composition for me. Very scenic view but composition is a bit random, like a snapshot, and the boat on the left is cropped awkwardly. I am not sure the beautiful landscape and coastline can do enough to elevate a fairly ordinary photo to FP. Cmao20 (talk) 16:17, 20 June 2025 (UTC)
Comment I definitely would ask for a better file name before supporting. Although I am not sure if I want to support yet, for all the reasons Cmao mentioned. Closing a featured picture promotion request
The bot
Note that the description below is for manual closure, this is mostly not needed anymore as there exists a bot (FPCBot) that counts the votes and handles the process below. However after the bot has counted the votes a manual review step is used to make sure the count is correct before the bot again picks up the work.
Manual procedure
Any experienced user may close requests.
- In Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate image, then [edit].
Add the result of the voting at the bottom (on a new line with a space first)
(for example see Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:The Bridge (August 2013).jpg). See also FPC-results-reviewed.
- Also edit the title of the candidate image template and add after the image tag
featured or not featured
For example:
:File:XXXXX.jpg
becomes
=== :File:XXXXX.jpg, featured === - Save your edit.
- If it is featured:
- Add the picture to the list of the four most recently featured pictures of an appropriate gallery of Commons:Featured pictures, list as the first one and delete the last one, so that the number is four again.
- Also add the picture to the appropriate gallery and section of Commons:Featured pictures, list. Click on the most appropriate link beneath where you just added it as one of the four images. An image should only appear ONE time in the galleries. After a successful nomination, the image can be placed in several of the Featured pictures categories.
- Add the template to the image description page.
- If it was an alternative image, use the subpage/com-nom parameter: For example, if File:Foo.jpg was promoted at Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Bar.jpg, use
- If the image is already featured on another wikipedia, just add featured=1 to the Assessments template. For instance becomes
- Add the picture to the chronological list of featured pictures. Put it in the gallery using this format: File:xxxxx.jpg|# - Headline<br>created by xxxxx, uploaded by xxxxx, nominated by xxxxx
- The # should be replaced by 1 for the first image nominated that month, and counts up after that. Have a look at the other noms on that page for examples.
- You may simplify this if multiple things were done by the same user. E.g.: File:xxxxx.jpg|# - Headline<br>created, uploaded, and nominated by xxxxx
- Add == FP promotion ==
File:XXXXX.jpg to the Talk Page of the nominator.
- As the last step (whether the image is featured or not; including FPXed, FPDed and withdrawn nominations), open Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list, click on [edit], and find the transclusion of the nomination you've just finished closing. It will be of the form:

Copy it to the bottom of Commons:Featured picture candidates/Log/June 2025), save that page, and remove it from the candidate list.
Closing a delisting request
- In Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate image, then [edit].
Add the result of the voting at the bottom (on a new line with a space first)
Result: x delist, x keep, x neutral => /not/ delisted. ~~~~
(for example see Commons:Featured picture candidates/removal/Image:Astrolabe-Persian-18C.jpg) - Also edit the title of the delisting candidate image template and add after the image tag
delisted or not delisted
For example:
=== :File:XXXXX.jpg === becomes === :File:XXXXX.jpg, delisted === - Move the actual template from Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list to the bottom of the actual month page on Commons:Featured picture candidates/Log/June 2025.
- If the outcome was not delisted, stop here. If it is delisted:
- Remove the picture from Commons:Featured pictures, list and any subpages.
- Edit the picture's description as follows:
- Replace the template Featured picture on the image description page by Delisted picture. If using the Assessments template, change featured=1 to featured=2 (do not change anything related to its status in other featured picture processes).
- Remove the image from all categories beginning with "Featured [pictures]" (example: Featured night photography, Featured pictures from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, Featured pictures of Paris).
- Remove the "Commons quality assessment" claim (d:Property:P6731) "Wikimedia Commons featured picture" from the picture's Structured data.
- Add a delisting-comment to the original entry in chronological list of featured pictures in bold-face, e. g. delisted 2007-07-19 (1-6) with (1-6) meaning 1 keep and 6 delist votes (change as appropriate). The picture in the gallery is not removed.
- If this is a Delist and Replace, the delisting and promotion must both be done manually. To do the promotion, follow the steps in the above section. Note that the assessment tag on the file page and the promotion tag on the nominator's talk page won't pick up the /replace subpage that these nominations use.
Manual archiving of a withdrawn nomination
- In Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate image, then [edit].
In the occasion that the FPCbot will not mark withdrawn nominations with a "to be reviewed" template and put them in Category:Featured picture candidates awaiting closure review just like if they were on the usual list, put the following "no" template:
- Also edit the title of the candidate image template and add after the image tag
not featured
For example:
:File:XXXXX.jpg
becomes
=== :File:XXXXX.jpg, not featured === - Save your edit.
- Open Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list, click on [edit], and find the transclusion of the nomination. It will be of the form:

Copy it to the bottom of Commons:Featured picture candidates/Log/June 2025), save that page, and remove it from the candidate list.
