More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Removing deletion tags from my files

Hi MKFI,

A month ago you put deletion tags on my files. But then I corrected my mistake and you replied to me that after one or two weeks deletion tags will be removed by the admin but the deletion tags have not been removed yet. Please remove those deletion tags from my files.

Hello MKFI. I am still a bit new to uploading photos to Wikimedia so I apologize for not crediting the photographer (Brianna Soukup), and adding where that photo came from. I re-edited the photo to give the photo a valid source for where it came from, and so it does not get deleted. However that being said, if it still does not meet the criteria for it to be on wikipedia I understand. Tv.Rule (talk)

Possible copyright violation: File: Professor Timothy Abiodun Adebayo.png

Hi MKFI.

I see you marked the File: Professor Timothy Abiodun Adebayo.png as a possible copyright violation and deleted the image. The image is not copyrighted. The person in question is a public figure, whose image can be used in any news related to him. Also, there is no law providing for image rights in Nigeria when such image is not an artistic work. Only artistic work image is copyrighted and needs permission to use. In essence, the image File: Professor Timothy Abiodun Adebayo.png is free to use.

@Opyquad: generally almost every recent photograph is copyrighted. According to Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Nigeria photographs are copyrighted for 50 years after publication in Nigeria. @MKFI: Thanks for sharing. The link provides an insight into image/photo copyright.

However, the law applies to artistic work and cinematograph films. This doesn't apply to public figures such as academics and politicians. Only celebrities here are making a new case for copyrighted images, which is yet to be documented. I will request for it to be undeleted. Opyquad (talk) 13:15, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Opyquad: once a file has been deleted only administrators can undelete it; I can't do that. You should make an undeletion request using the above link. However at least the Commons guideline page does not mention the exceptions about public figures, and it is a really odd copyright law if that is the case. Nigeria is a member of the Berne convention which usually means everything is copyrighted by default. Artistic works usually just enjoy longer copyright period. @MKFI: I get your point. Unfortunately, that's the image rights in Nigeria, provided the photo/image is not used for commercial purpose. @MKFI The article is an interpretation of copyright. If you are not convinced about the submissions of the writer, kindly check Section 1(1) of Nigeria’s Copyright Act. This is just a proof that there is no universal copyright law. And I think Wikipedia Commons should update their article on Copyright in Nigeria. @Opyquad: section 51 shows that artistic works include photographs not comprised in a cinematograph film which suggest that photographs are included. @MKFI The photograph you mentioned refers either to one taken from an artistic work or from a stage play. However, the File: Professor Timothy Abiodun Adebayo.png does not fall under either of these categories, making it free to use and free from any litigation.
