Mathildah Mokgatle, is a Professor, Head of Department of Public Health and the Chairperson of the Higher Degrees Committee with 19 years of experience in postgraduate teaching at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. Her academic expertise lies in practicing and teaching qualitative and quantitative research, intervention studies, health programs evaluation, qualitative and qualitative statistical data analysis.
She has extensive experience in various areas of public health particularly in infectious disease prevention and control, social aspects of HIV and AIDS, and currently serves in the Ministerial Advisory Committee for Covid-19 guidelines. She has worked in various public health projects and programs as an independent researcher, team member, and supervisor of a variety of research projects conducted by masters and doctor of public health students.
Her niche area is in sexual and reproductive health - sexually transmitted infections across target groups, and behavior modification of risky sexual behavior. More recently, the focus of her research has been on evaluating STI partner notification modalities in South Africa and a collaborative project on “Laboratory science and public health management of sexually transmitted infections” which was awarded the NRF self-initiated grant for unrated researchers, the VLIR/UOS grant. My work culminated in a numerous publications on STIs, sexual behavior and sexual and reproductive health. She collaborates with Gauteng Department of Health on health systems and Covid-19 projects and with the National Department of Health on sexual and reproductive health- HIV/STI surveillanc
