The University of South Africa (UNISA), through its Institute for Catalysis and Energy Solutions (ICES) at College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET), hosted a high‑level delegation from the Sichuan Provincial Department of Science and Technology (SPST), China. Led by Deputy Director General Mr. Xuehua Chen, the delegation included senior officials and academics from Sichuan’s leading universities and research institutions. The visit aimed to strengthen science, technology, and innovation ties between Sichuan and South Africa, with a symposium held at the NB Pityana Council Chambers, Florida Campus.

The program featured welcome remarks by Prof Bhekie Mamba, Executive Dean of CSET, and presentations from both sides highlighting institutional strengths and ongoing collaborations. Notably, Prof Cairong Jiang of Sichuan University of Science and Engineering, also a Professor Extraordinarius at UNISA, showcased joint research and student supervision initiatives ICES. Delegates also toured CSET laboratories in the Eureka Building, underscoring UNISA’s commitment to advancing international partnerships in energy, nanotechnology, and materials science.

In his keynote, Mr. Chen outlined Sichuan’s robust industrial and scientific landscape, achievements in cooperation with South Africa, and the launch of the “Double Thousand” Initiative under the Belt and Road framework. The plan seeks to implement 1,000 joint projects and facilitate exchanges for 1,000 young scientists by 2030. Closing the symposium, Prof Mamba reaffirmed UNISA’s dedication to fostering global collaboration that drives innovation and sustainable development for both nations.
