On 11–12 September 2025, the Institute for Catalysis and Energy Solutions (ICES) participated in a two-day career and science awareness programme in Edenville, Free State, and Soshanguve, Gauteng. The engagement was a collaborative effort between ICES and the University of Pretoria’s Departments of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, supported by NRF-SAASTA under the theme “Climate Change and Food Science.”

The first day of the programme was held at Ngwathe Secondary School, located in the village of Ngwathe in the Free State. Here, the team engaged with more than 450 learners from Grades 9 to 11, introducing them to the world of science, its applications, and its role in solving global challenges.

On the second day, the initiative continued at Lethabong Maths, Science, and ICT School of Specialisation in Soshanguve, Gauteng. The school had also extended an invitation to learners from the neighbouring Semphato Secondary School. Together, the schools brought close to 800 learners, from Grade 9 to 11 to the auditorium, where they eagerly listened to talks on how science influences everyday life. Topics ranged from energy solutions and food science to climate change, showing learners how research can be applied to address societal needs.

The programme not only highlighted cutting-edge research at ICES but also sought to inspire learners to pursue careers in STEM. It provided valuable guidance on career pathways, including university subject choices and modules that could lead them into energy-related research in the future.

The sessions were delivered by different ICES staff members, each focusing on their respective research platforms within the institute. This collaborative effort with the University of Pretoria ensured that learners gained exposure to both institutions’ expertise, broadening their understanding of science and its opportunities.
