Ms. Hlengane Mokwena, a Ph.D. student at the Institute for Catalysis and Energy Solutions (ICES), who was selected to join the South African delegation led by Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, at the Second Belt and Road Innovation Conference on Science and Technology Exchange in Chengdu, People’s Republic of China, from 10 to 12 June 2025.

Ms. Mokwena was one of three postgraduate students selected by the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI) from across the country to participate in the conference. She is one of the beneficiaries of the RSA-China collaborative projects; a RSA-China bilateral funding secured by ICES's Prof Ndzondelelo Bingwa for the 2025-2026 cycle.

The Belt and Road Innovation conference was attended by government officials, representatives of international organizations, and students from over 100 countries. It provided a platform for technological exchange, promoted communication among young scientists, and facilitated dialogue on science policy, all aimed at enhancing cooperation and collaboration among countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Ms. Mokwena’s research aligns with the priority areas of the Belt and Road Initiative and focuses on mineral resource beneficiation through catalysis for energy generation. Her work centes on the production of biofuels, particularly biokerosene through catalytic processes.

Reflecting on her involvement in the conference, Mokwena expressed gratitude to the DSTI for the opportunity to engage with international students and participate in high-level discussions on a global stage. She believes the experience will shape her perspective on the interconnectedness of scientific research and deepen her understanding of the internationalization of research.
