On 27 February 2017, His Excellency Dr Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki, succeeded Judge Bernard Ngoepe as Chancellor of Unisa. The selection of the former politician and President of the Republic was both timely and appropriate as he enjoyed a close relationship with Unisa during the 21st century. Unisa’s Africanisation programme was profoundly motivated by Mbeki’s New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) policy and his subsequent conflict-resolution and development initiatives in Africa. Unisa furthermore hosts the Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute (TMALI) and houses the Thabo Mbeki Presidential Library as well as collaborating with the Mbeki-inspired South African Democracy Trust (SADET). His standing as an African intellectual further enhanced Unisa’s efforts to entrench itself as a leading university in Africa and beyond.
