Hello, my real name is Simon Pierre Barrette.
I began contributing to Commons at about the same time I became active on Wikipedia (mostly on the French version of it). At that time, I was taking pictures on an occasional basis, without any particular theme in mind. I was trying different techniques and, when appropriate, I would bring some of these pictures into WP.
In the spring of 2009, I went a step further: I bought a Canon 40D with a 400mm zoom lens (Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM), and began “focusing” on birds and wildlife. Wildlife photography goes very well with my need to escape the urban environment. It also allows me to go back to my roots - my earlier training was in wildlife biology. I’m actually getting very passionate about wildlife photography.
I like to document species for which few pictures exist in Commons. I thoroughly enjoy the composition aspects in photography, as well as the challenge that consists in capturing the animal's distinctive expression.

J'ai commencé à contribuer sur Commons à peu près au même moment que sur Wikipédia (surtout la version francophone). À l'époque, je pratiquais la photographie de manière occasionnelle sur différents sujets. J'expérimentais différentes techniques et j'insérais ces photos dans les articles de WP lorsque l'article s'y prêtait.
C'est au printemps 2009 que je me lance plus sérieusement avec l'acquisition d'un Canon 40D et d'un zoom 400mm (Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM) pour me “focaliser” sur les oiseaux et la faune. Ce genre de photographie va très bien avec mon besoin d'espace et de nature. Cette activité me permet aussi de renouer avec ma première formation en biologie de la faune et j'en deviens de plus en plus passionné.
J'aime photographier les espèces pour lesquelles il existe peu de photo sur Commons. J'aime beaucoup lorsque je réussis à réaliser une composition intéressante dans mes photos ou le défi de saisir une expression caractéristique de l'animal.

Attentive contributors may have noticed that some of the pictures that I uploaded, and of which I am the author, are also found on Kalos, the digital object manager of Université Laval library where I am working as a librarian. Please note that those pictures are taken outside my working hours as a leisure activity, on my own initiative and not requested from my superiors. Uploads may happen during my working hours, but I see it as a GLAM/Wiki activity. This is also done on my own initiative and not requested from my superiors. If anyone think this is problematic, please let me know.
