Map edit request[edit]
Hi Cephas - on your map File:Arenaria interpres map.svg, could you make the wintering areas in western Europe more obvious, please (similar to the east coast on North America)? It is barely visible except at high resolutions. Maybe a different colour overall, less close to the sea colour, might be better too. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 21:19, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
- Excellent, thanks! I was also thinking, the widths of the colours are very unequal in some places? In some areas (e.g. eastern USA) it is very thick, in others (e.g. NW Europe, W Mexico) it is very narrow. Would it be easy to make them more equal? - MPF (talk) 23:02, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks again! Unfortunately, that is just bad drawing on the source map (I took a look at it); the same artefact is not shown in other published distribution maps. It is of course a strictly coastal species outside of the breeding season, which leaves the problem of illustrating a strip which is thousands of km long, but no more than a few tens of metres (to at most, perhaps 1 km) wide, on a map where that width is invisible at the scales used. One has to make an accomodation for that, and using a line of equal width on all coasts is the best option. - MPF (talk) 23:30, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
Another map edit, please: File:Cistothorus platensis map.svg, where the problem is that this has been split into two species (IOC; scroll ⅓ way down page). The bulk of this map, the migratory population (orange, yellow, blue) in USA and northeast Mexico is now Cistothorus stellaris, while the resident populations (purple) in southern Mexico and Central America remain in C. platensis, which also occurs widely in South America. My suggestion therefore would be to remove the purple areas from this map, and rename it File:Cistothorus stellaris map.svg; and then create a new map for C. platensis based on a South America base map. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 09:37, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

Your excellent maps[edit]
Hi, I was looking at your range maps, and they are very good! I noticed that most bird pages do not have range maps so I'm thinking of making some maps myself, but I like your style the best. I can find the source of the data at the IUCN pages, but I don't know how you transferred them to the maps available on wikicommons. Would you be willing to point me in the direction of how to make these makes so I can get started on the birds with missing range maps? Thanks! Mattximus (talk) 23:01, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

Another map update, please![edit]
Hi Cephas - with the new split (effective today) of Numenius hudsonicus from Numenius phaeopus, the map File:Numenius phaeopus map.svg needs dividing into two maps, please: an edited File:Numenius phaeopus map.svg (Old World including Iceland & eastern Greenland; remove the Americas), and a new map File:Numenius hudsonicus map.svg (Americas only). Thanks! - MPF (talk) 16:00, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
- @MPF: Done. I named File:Numenius phaeopus map old world.svg the new Numenius phaeopus map. --Cephas (talk) 16:40, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks, though should have just uploaded the new version on top of the old one (or rename the old one something like File:Numenius hudsonicus and Numenius phaeopus map.svg to reflect its updated circumscription); now all uses of the old out-of-date map will need to be changed (tedious, as it is on so many pages!). I'll also think of a better name for the new N. phaeopus map (as your name suggests it might be an incomplete map, rather than a complete map of the updated circumscription). - MPF (talk) 17:08, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
- I've renamed it File:Numenius phaeopus distribution map.svg - MPF (talk) 17:10, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

South Sudan border[edit]
Hello.
Can you add the border of South Sudan which became independent in 2011 in File:Tragelaphus buxtoni map.svg, File:Tragelaphus phaleratus map.svg, File:Tragelaphus scriptus map.svg and File:Tragelaphus angasii distribution.svg?
Yours sincerely, Maphobbyist (talk) 15:46, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for the updates in the two maps! Can you also add the border of South Sudan in File:Tragelaphus buxtoni map.svg (the border is still pale) and File:Tragelaphus angasii distribution.svg (where it is missing)? That is all. Please don't think I am making a fuss. I am adding the borders of South Sudan in current PNG maps where it is missing. Unfortunately I don't know how to edit SVG maps myself and also sophisticated PNG maps like orthographical maps and maps with topographical features, that is why I asked you.

File:Eriocnemis nigrivestis map.svg[edit]

Another map edit, please![edit]
Hi Cephas - in File:Spatula discors map.svg, could you change the area of purple on the east coast of Brazil to blue, please? They only winter there, not resident. Also, the area of orange on the west coast of North America should be yellow (migration only, not breeding), and the colour removed from Seward Peninsila (Alaska), where they do not occur regularly. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 15:02, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
And another, please :-) File:Nycticorax nycticorax map.svg has a couple of errors: does not occur in Hokkaido (northern Japan), so should be grey not blue; or the northern part of Michigan (between Great Lakes), should be grey not green. Also breeding is more extensive in Europe now (European Breeding Bird Atlas 2, 2021), should be yellow across all of France except close to N coast, all of the Netherlands, and throughout the lower altitude areas of eastern Europe north to 50°N (south of Czech Republic-Poland border, and all of Ukraine except northernmost parts; except for the Carpathian, Balkan, and other mountains). Thanks! - MPF (talk) 12:16, 2 March 2021 (UTC)
Range Maps for Birds[edit]
Hello Cephas, I am an active editor of neotropical bird pages mostly on spanish wiki, with >570 new pages created and > 800 significant editions, see here. I am also an admin at Wikispecies. I miss good maps at the great majority of pages, and have no time, no skills, to create. Would you attend if I ask some I consider very important? Congrats on your work.--Hector Bottai (talk) 19:07, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Hector Bottai (talk), No problem. I'm actually completing maps for birds of North and Central America with West Indies. Just put your suggestions below. --Cephas (talk) 19:11, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- Great! My absolute priority would be on families I have completed pages and have no maps: es:Conopophagidae; es:Grallariidae; es:Furnariidae; es:Formicariidae; es:Tityridae; es:Rhinocryptidae and genus/family es:Melanopareia. Many thanks.--Hector Bottai (talk) 19:22, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- Your work on maps for neotropical species is being absolutely fantastic. It is funny because I asked you one map for the whole family and you are doing for every species! Please go ahead!. Please note I have categorized hundreds of your maps at Commons with for example Furnariidae distribution maps, etc. etc. having created many new categories not yet existing. Many thanks once again.--Hector Bottai (talk) 15:15, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hello Hector Bottai, It is because that is what I was already doing. But I still can do your map for any families, if ever you can give me references I can work from. --Cephas (talk) 15:26, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
- No hurry at all. When HBW was available there were maps of families. I am not sure now at BOW, content only opened por paid suscribers. Looks you do have access. Try here for Grallariidae, for example, [1]. --Hector Bottai (talk) 16:05, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

- Good morning friend, hope you have a peaceful Easter, or just a nice sunday, independently of your beliefs. Your maps for neotropical passeriformes have been a major achievement, and now that you are almost there with the list I passed, I cannot loose the chance to add some more families that I have worked out: es:Pipridae, es:Cotingidae, es:Thamnophilidae and es:Tyrannidae. These last two are huge and I am sure you will have fun for several months...Cheers, and thanks once again.--Hector Bottai (talk) 12:03, 4 April 2021 (UTC)--Hector Bottai (talk) 12:03, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Hector Bottai: The work is motivating. I am impressed with the consistency (always a minimum amount of information, nice list of references, etc.) of the development of these birds articles in Spanish that I have never seen, neither on English nor on French Wp. --Cephas (talk) 12:23, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the recognition. You will find that consistency only partially at Tyrannidae, Pipridae and Cotingidae, still a lot of work to do at the species page level. I need to go back there, but currently working on multicoloured family Thraupidae (>400 species, 112 genera), around 40% progress and the family page is still a mess. I am remembering now some very small caribbean families recently split, some monotypic, for you to consider also: es:Calyptophylidae, es:Phaenicophilidae, es:Nesospingidae, es:Spindalidae, es:Zeledoniidae, es:Teretistridae. And es:Mitrospingidae split from Thraupidae. Cheers.--Hector Bottai (talk) 20:58, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
- Congrats my friend! Challenging family Thamnophilidae completed! It's a major achievement. Thanks.--Hector Bottai (talk) 22:37, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

Range maps[edit]
Hi Cephas: Can I request your help with some range maps? Specifically, it would be great to get one for en:Trinidad euphonia (Euphonia trinitatis) and en:Mountain blackeye (Zosterops emiliae). Also in all your spare time (ha ha), any you could do for en:List of endemic birds of Borneo would be much appreciated. Thanks! MeegsC (talk) 13:11, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- Hello MeegsC, I take note of the request, though I have already a whole order ongoing and I'm prioritizing species of the Ameraicas for now. --Cephas (talk) 13:25, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
Range map Cinclodes pabsti[edit]
Hello friend. Thanks again for your extraordinary work. For this species, the ssp espinhacensis is only listed as full species by the Brazilian Committee and its page is as a ssp. My sugestion is to add the small range of espinhacensis (see IUCN map) with a different colour and legend, so we can use it at both pages. Cheers.--Hector Bottai (talk) 21:43, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

Ramphocelus flammigerus map[edit]
Hello friend, most of the authors, including BLI, HBW and IOC are separating Ramphocelus icteronotus from flammigerus, but Clements/eBird not yet. As several wikis have both pages, I suggest to either separate the maps or show both in the same figure. Great work. --Hector Bottai (talk) 14:33, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

Muscovy Duck Map[edit]
The Map You Added Needs To Be Corrected. Muscovys Are Also In South Florida (Dade & Broward). As Well As In Chile. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mmartinez207 (talk • contribs) 13:14, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
Cyanerpes cyaneus[edit]
Hi friend, Just a contribution. The literature shows a population in Cuba, resident, of uncertain origin, probably introduced, that is not reflected in your map. Cheers.--Hector Bottai (talk) 17:40, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the edition, but seems you forgot to paint Cuba...Cheers.--Hector Bottai (talk) 12:16, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Hector Bottai: Paint Cuba ? I put it in a different green to show the difference with the natural residence. Did you refresh your screen ? --Cephas (talk) 12:21, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
- Funny, refreshed several times and not showing the color, but went to some application and it is! Forget it. Thanks again.--Hector Bottai (talk) 12:29, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Hector Bottai: Commons has sometimes (often) strange behaviours. What you experienced happened to me several times. --Cephas (talk) 12:32, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

Question about Phytotoma rara map[edit]
Hi, Cephas. I saw that you uploaded a distribution map of Phytotoma rara. I have a question, maybe you could know the answer. I live in Chiloe Archipelago, where "Year-round" and "Breeding" territories merge (I heared one in my backyard today). Does the source say anything about that zone? I would to add some pixels for the islands but I can't check the source. Thanks in advance. Lin linao ¿dime? 02:12, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hello @Lin linao:, The source says the species is present year-round on Chiloe Island. The thing is, often, the scale at which my maps are drawn doesn't provide very much precisions on exact distribution: it is more a general idea about where a particular species is located in the world. In this particular case, Chiloe Island doesn't even appear on the blank map I'm using. In addition, I can say that even when the "precision" is available on the map and on the source, the source(s) is (are) not always right. I can say this based on species in my own region that I know well, and I'm sure precisions could be asked for many of the maps that I draw. --Cephas (talk) 11:54, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
Thamnistes rufescens map[edit]
Hi friend, What I could see, the distribution of this species goes south to Bolivia (Cochabamba). Thanks.--Hector Bottai (talk) 20:01, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
Seriema map[edit]
Hi Cephas: Any chance I can get you to do a new map for black-legged seriema? The only map available on Commons doesn't show country boundaries, which may make it hard for people to visualise where it lives. Thanks! MeegsC (talk) 14:19, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
Cercomacra manu map[edit]
Dear Cephas, the map according eBird is missing isolated areas in Central amazonian Brazil, in the text they mention and they also show in the registers map. I personally took a bad photo of this difficult bird in one os those areas. The IUCN map is much more accurated in this case. Cercomacra manu Thanks! --Hector Bottai (talk) 18:24, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
Maranon Antshrike Map[edit]
Hello, I would like to thank you for including an SVG map for the Thamnophilus shumbae map. I was wondering how you did it. Thanks in advance! NinjaWeeb (talk) 16:22, 22 June 2021 (UTC)
Good quality. --Manfred Kuzel 07:32, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
