Academic literacy is the ability to read, write, and understand, interpret and organise knowledge within academic disciplines.

Reading for academic purposes

To succeed in your studies you need to become a critical reader, and one way of doing that is to read lots of texts of different kinds. This will teach you to cope with the large amount of reading you have to do to prepare for your assignments and examinations.

 Reading for academic purposes:

  • teaches you to enjoy reading
  • helps you obtain more information about the subject you are studying from all the sources you are reading or have read
  • stimulates your mind
  • stimulates your imagination about a topic or subject
  • expands your vocabulary as you learn new words and concepts and research their meanings
  • improves your spelling 

Writing for academic purposes

Writing for academic purposes is very structured and coherent. We encourage you to write simple, accurate and short sentences to form coherent paragraphs. This will help you to do well in your assignments (formative assessments) and your exams (summative assessments). 

When you write for academic purposes, follow these three steps:

  1. Brainstorm – create a mind map to identify the main ideas of the topic.
  2. Plan – decide what information belongs in the introduction to your text, what belongs in the body of your text, and what belongs in the conclusion to your text.
  • Introduction/orientation – this part of your text introduces the topic and sets the tone.
  • Body/development – this part of your text is an exploration or discussion of the topic.
  • Conclusion/resolution – this part of your text is a summary of the main ideas you have discussed, and could include some suggestions or recommendations.

3.    Paragraph – divide your text into paragraphs. Each paragraph should consist of three to five sentences dealing with a particular aspect of the main theme.

The online specific academic literacies programme

Unisa offers an online specific academic literacies programme to introduce students to academic reading and writing in specific disciplines. Academic literacy is different for each discipline – in other words, students and practitioners of a particular discipline must be able to write in a style and use terminology that is accepted within that discipline.

Ukufundela izinhloso zemfundo

Ukuze uphumelele ezifundweni zakho udinga ukuba ngumfundi ohlolisisayo, futhi enye indlela yokwenza lokho ukufunda imibhalo eminingi yezinhlobo ezahlukene. Lokhu kuzokufundisa ukubhekana nenani elikhulu lokufunda okufanele ulenze ukuze ulungiselele imisebenzi yakho ezokwenziwa kanye nokuhlolwa.

Ukubhalela izinhloso zemfundo kuhleleke kakhulu futhi kuyahambisana. Sikukhuthaza ukuthi ubhale imisho elula, enembile futhi emifushane ukuze wakhe izigaba ezihambisanayo. Lokhu kuzokusiza ukuthi wenze kahle emisebenzini yakho ezokwenziwa (ukuhlola okuthuthukisa ikhono labafundi) kanye nokuhlolwa kwakho (ukuhlola kokuphela konyaka).

  • Isigaba – hlukanisa umbhalo wakho ube yizigaba. Isigaba ngasinye kufanele sibe nemisho emithathu kuya kwemihlanu ethinta isici esithile sendikimba esemqoka.

Stap 2 – Akademiese geletterdheid

Akademiese geletterdheid is die vermoë om inligting in akademiese vakrigtings te kan lees, daaroor te kan skryf en dit te verstaan, interpreteer en organiseer. 

Lees vir akademiese doeleindes

As jy sukses met jou studies wil behaal, moet jy ’n kritiese leser word, en een manier om dit te doen, is om baie tekste oor uiteenlopende onderwerpe te lees. Dit sal jou leer hoe om groot hoeveelhede leeswerk te hanteer wanneer jy voorbereiding vir jou werkopdragte en die eksamen moet doen.

 Lees vir akademiese doeleindes:

  • leer jou om lees te geniet
  • help jou om meer inligting oor die onderwerp wat jy bestudeer te bekom vanuit die verskillende bronne wat jy lees of gelees het
  • stimuleer jou brein
  • stimuleer jou verbeelding oor ’n onderwerp of vak
  • brei jou woordeskap uit omdat jy nuwe woorde en begrippe leer en hulle betekenisse navors
  • verbeter jou spelvermoë

Skryf vir akademiese doeleindes

Skryfwerk vir akademiese doeleindes moet goed gestruktureerd en samehangend wees. Ons wil jou aanmoedig om eenvoudige, akkurate en kort sinne te gebruik om samehangende paragrawe te vorm. Dit sal jou help om goed in jou werkopdragte (formatiewe assessering), asook in die eksamen (summatiewe assessering), te vaar.

Wanneer jy vir akademiese doeleindes skryf, volg hierdie stappe:

  • Hou ’n dinkskrum – skep ’n breinkaart om die hoofidees van die onderwerp te identifiseer.
  • Beplan – besluit watter inligting in die inleiding van jou teks hoort, wat in die inhoud hoort en wat in die samevatting van jou teks hoort.
  • Inleiding/oriëntering – hierdie deel van jou teks lei die onderwerp in en bepaal die aard van die teks.
  • Inhoud/ontwikkeling – dié deel van jou teks is ’n verkenning of bespreking van die onderwerp.
  • Samevatting/gevolgtrekking – hierdie deel van jou teks is ’n opsomming van die hoofidees wat jy bespreek het en kan voorstelle of aanbevelings insluit.

Paragraaf – verdeel jou teks in paragrawe. Elke paragraaf moet uit drie tot vyf sinne bestaan wat ’n bepaalde aspek van die hooftema bespreek.

Die aanlyn- spesifieke geletterdheidsprogramme

Unisa bied spesifieke aanlyn- akademiesegeletterdheidsprogram aan om studente aan akademiese lees- en skryfwerk in bepaalde vakrigtings bekend te stel. Akademiese geletterdheid verskil van dissipline tot dissipline – met ander woorde, studente en praktisyns van ’n bepaalde vakrigting moet in staat wees om in ’n styl wat aanvaarbaar vir daardie vakrigting is te skryf en toepaslike terminologie vir die vakrigting te gebruik.
