Denzil Chetty is a graduate of the University of Durban-Westville (now the University of KwaZulu-Natal). He holds an academic position in the Department of Religious Studies and Arabic at the University of South Africa (Unisa). He specializes in Religion and Society, Education and Technology, and the Digital Humanities. He holds a range of awards, which include: 2003-Abe Bailey Fellowship (United Kingdom); 2011-Unisa Award for Innovation in Teaching and Learning; 2014-Shanghai Open University African Visiting Scholar (China); and 2015 Unisa Excellence Award in Teaching and Learning for his contribution to institutional knowledge. Chetty serves as an Assistant Editor for Alternation - Interdisciplinary Journal for the Study of the Arts and Humanities in Southern Africa and is also a member of the Editorial Committee for the International Association for the History of Religion (IAHR) book series with Equinox – The Study of Religion in a Global Context. He has authored several accredited articles, book chapters, and a single-authored book publication, served as guest editor for several special journal issues, and participated in several national and international conferences.
In 2020 through a DHET seed fund, Chetty established the Academic Development Open Virtual Hub (ADOVH) as an incubator for digital innovation, with a specific focus on student support. Subsequent to the DHET fund, Chetty received a DHET UCDP grant to further enhance student support and 4IR readiness. Chetty is currently seconded to the Department of Tuition Support & Facilitation of Learning (DTSFL) where he leads these strategic projects.
