Hello, Henrytow!
Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Fine. What I do not understand is the further message saying why not add some categories. The image already has seven. Isn't that enough?

That really is enough. This seems to be a (rare) mistake by the robot. I have told his owner. Thanks. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:37, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

This media may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Hans Sachs label -7782, on the Karen Zabel poster verso.jpg, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Painting[edit]

I kept the dog painting in the DN because you didn't provide a link to the "replacement" version. I looked in your contributions and only found the blurry one referenced in the DN. You can leave messages on my talk page too ! Ellin Beltz (talk) 17:27, 4 December 2015 (UTC)

Category:Greyhounds_in_art_in_tapestry[edit]

Nuvola apps tree question.svg
Greyhounds in art in tapestry has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at Commons:Categories for discussion/2015/12/Category:Greyhounds_in_art_in_tapestry.
If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.
In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Formatting[edit]

First, if you intent your sentence with spaces, the wikimedia software automatically puts it in a box.:

Sentence in a box. I don't really understand the usefulness of this "feature."

Second, if you start a line with a # it will be indented and automatically numbered. Further new lines starting with numbers will create a list:

 1. Item one
 2. Item two

Be careful though, because if you insert a new paragraph, it interrupts the counting

 1. Item three

Third, if you want to start a new paragraph, you need to hit enter/return twice, leaving a space between paragraphs. If you just jump down to the next line, the software only treats it as a space, and your paragraphs are joined together. Like so. If you edit this page, you'll see these past two sentences are on new lines, yet all appear as a single paragraph in normal viewing mode.

Hope that helps! Themightyquill (talk) 11:06, 7 May 2016 (UTC)

Editing of discussions[edit]

Henrytow; Please do not edit or remove comments made by other people unless they are offensive, uncivil or otherwise violate the guidelines or policies of Commons.[1][2] Otherwise, such edits are rude and make it difficult for others to follow discussions. When it is necessary to edit or remove comments, your edit summary must explain your reasoning. Thank you, Walter Siegmund (talk) 16:55, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

I am mystified by the comment above by Wsigmund. I have never edited or removed another's comments, nor have I made any comments at all for the last four days My last was:

Starting with my neglect several years ago to make GiA a subcategory of Category:Greyhound, and continuing with my failure to "conform to the categorization structure on commons at all," mea culpa. I could defend the structure I devised, but why bother? . I have just left a message for mightyquill saying that as far as I am concerned he now controls this category. I may add an image from time to time, but I won't change the categorization or remove any images. I have been working on this category for some years now, and that must suffice. I still think that several of the categories are erroneously named, but I shall place comments to that effect on the categories, not here. Thank you both for your comments. This is my last on this topic.

This time I really do mean it: No more comments on this topic. Henrytow (talk) 20:41, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

Henrytow; The links to your edits that I provided above show that someone logged into your account removed comments made by other people. I'm repeating them here.[3][4] If these are not your edits, your account may have been compromised. You may secure your account with help of advice contained in en:User account security. In particular, use a strong password, change it quarterly and log out when leaving your computer unattended. Unintended edits or deletions may be avoided by selecting the "Show changes" button and reviewing your changes, before selecting "Save page". Good luck. Dates[edit]

I am mystified by your email: I can't find anywhere that I asked you anything, so unfortunately, I haven't a clue what you're talking about. Could you show me where I asked you this? Part of the problem is that, as far as I can tell, you've not made any edits to any Wikimedia project in the last three months, so there's been plenty of time for me to forget anything that I might have said to you. Nyttend (talk) 02:09, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

As I remember things, you sent me a message saying "Where did you get those dates?" Or maybe "that date." It could be that you saw the text below an image on Commons on 2918 P Street, where I did list some dates. Those dates, by and large, came from the Georgetown books at the National Archives. Hope this helps. Henrytow (talk) 19:35, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Dumbarton Street (not Dumbarton Avenue).JPG. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.
