Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
-
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
-
-
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.--EugeneZelenko 15:43, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

- Sorry, I am unable to translate correctly this sentence "just pointing out for the sake of setting record straight"
- If you have always a probleme, please try to explain it to me more simply or contact a english lang native admin which will be more qualified as me to resolve it.

"Just wondering..."[edit]
Hi Prashanthns - I took them out because they are parent categories of Category:Encephalartos natalensis. See Commons:Categories#Over-categorization for more details. Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 14:26, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Files you uploaded may be deleted[edit]
The files listed below, which you uploaded, have been tagged OTRS pending for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the OTRS team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the OTRS team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have already sent the permission, please re-send it to "permissions-commonswikimedia.org" now. Please quote the file name in your email. At the same time, please leave a message at the OTRS noticeboard so that a volunteer can follow this up. Alternatively, you can contact an OTRS volunteer directly. Please note that this message is being left by an automated bot, whose operator is not an OTRS volunteer. Thanks for your time! Please help translate this message! Permission to use your photo[edit]
Hi Prashanthns, I would like to use your photo of shifting cultivation at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jhum.jpg in a textbook. Please email me so I can give you more details. Thank you!— Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.116.86.130 (talk • contribs)
- No need for any explicit permission as long as you credit it to User:Prashanthns/Wikimedia Commons. I do not have your email anyways! If you do use it, I would appreciate a little detail for my own records. Do send it to my email when possible. Cheers. Prashanthns (talk) 10:29, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
Hi Prashanthns, thanks! My email is *****@yahoo.com

- I have added the OTRS ticket to both files. Plesae note that the latter one was originally named Unid_beetle_Pakke.jpg which is the filename referred to in the permission mail. It has been since renamed to its present location, based on id on the Beetles project. I presume the permission applies. Prashanthns (talk) 09:37, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Important message for file movers[edit]
A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
