Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

File tagging File:Raina-Telgemeier 2011-05-05.jpg[edit]
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Raina-Telgemeier 2011-05-05.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or send an email with copy of a written permission to OTRS (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). This also applies if you are the author yourself. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:OP}} on file description page.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, and Commons:Permission if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own. Unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

- This image includes the work of a living artist, which is till copyrighted ad therefore needs a separate permission from the artist. In addition, there relation of the Flickr account with photographer is unclear to me. --Túrelio (talk) 09:16, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
Not-free-US-FOP[edit]
Hi Gazebo, could you explain why you added this template to my photographs? I do not understand how it can apply. --Fæ (talk) 11:09, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- The photos to which the tag was added appeared to show artwork and/or sculptures. Photographs of copyrighted artwork that are taken in the UK are noninfringing in the UK under UK FOP (freedom of panorama) but could be non-free in the US because FOP in the US does not extend to artwork or sculptures. From what one understands, the current Commons policy is to allow photos of copyrighted artwork if FOP applies to artwork in the country where the photo was taken; the {{Not-free-US-FOP}} tag is intended for indicating that such photos might be non-free in the US and that the situation might change in the future. For photos in which all the depicted artwork/sculptures are out of copyright and the {{FOP-UK}} tag was added due to architectural works in the photo, it could be useful to add a clarifying note to the page for the photo; in such a case, it would not be a problem to remove the {{Not-free-US-FOP}} tag. --Gazebo (talk) 11:52, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- I have just checked over the (old) RFC. If future real case law established that there is anything to worry about, then we can use the existing FoP categories to analyse which photographs we would need to review or mark up to comply with any new legal requirements. There are many, many possible future bizarre changes in US law that just might happen, adding templates warning that they might happen does not seem particularly helpful. I would prefer it if you did not blanket add this template to my uploads, particularly as I have added over 250,000 images to Commons and I doubt you are going to do this systematically or correctly handle all the fringe cases. --Fæ (talk) 12:54, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
Is there a reason why you aren't adding templates explaining whether or not New Zealand, Canadian, South African, and Pakistani law applies? Why especially US law on non-US images? --GRuban (talk) 16:14, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

Derivative works[edit]
No opposition to your deletion requests of my photos, but I really don't get what derivative works' policies applied here mean. Commons:Derivative works really doesn't help. For example, if I take a photo of Times Square and it contains several logos of trademarks, or if I take a photo of a public park/playground with a tiny model of Mickey Mouse in it, am I allowed to upload them to Commons and license them with a free license?
This is to avoid copyright violations in my future uploads (as I have a pile of photos in my computer and want to contribute them here, not counting those transferred from Flickr). Quenhitran (talk) 06:47, 19 July 2014 (UTC) Please reply on my talk page
Use HTTPS for Flickr[edit]
Hi, You want to change all links? There are then thousands of affected files. Apart from that: You are flooding my watchlist with that kind of massedits. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:20, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
- @Steinsplitter: Thanks for mentioning the issue. Given among other things the plan for Wikimedia sites to use HTTPS by default, it would seem useful if protocol-relative or HTTPS links were used for sites that are known to support HTTPS. At the same time, there might be a better way to change HTTP links to HTTPS en masse than VisualFileChange.js. --Gazebo (talk) 11:47, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
- Sites are using HTTPS by default yet. Changing the mw parser function (which happen unlikely) or doing it wit a Bot (+b). Likely this schould be added to a maintenance bot, for example YaCBot. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:51, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open![edit]
You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear Gazebo,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
-- Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 09:43, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:The Mickey Mouse Club Mouseketeers Sharon Baird 1956.jpg[edit]
This media may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:The Mickey Mouse Club Mouseketeers Sharon Baird 1956.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |
