Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
-
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
-
-
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:04, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

Your Flickr uploads[edit]
Hello Palosirkka!
Thanks a lot for your contributions! Thank you for transferring images from Flickr to Commons! Two hints ahead:
- Always upload the highest resolution of a photograph that is available on flickr
- You can use this tool for your flickr uploads. It makes the whole procedure much easier and faster for you!
Thank you for your support! Greetings, High Contrast (talk) 10:00, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hi High Contrast and thank you for the kind words of encouragement and advice! Doesn't the User:FlickreviewR bot nowadays pretty much take care of making sure the highest reso is available? It's somewhat tedious to do manually, especially on a relatively slow uplink connection. I'll certainly take Flinfo for a spin, looks interesting. Palosirkka (talk) 11:06, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Improving with Scour[edit]
Hello Palosirkka, I see you improve lots of SVGs with this. But please be careful, do you now that Scour is a little bit imperfekt and buggy? The development and support is seams simply inactive too, but you can also ask User:DieBuche for aid. If you find some exsamplse for this bug that would be helpful. Regards -- πϵρήλιο ℗ 13:31, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Perhelion! Yes, I realize nothing's perfect but I've had great success with Scour. I've only noticed a few images changing visually. Thanks for the heads up! Palosirkka (talk) 13:40, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
- It is not really legal to change copyrighted and trademarked images and upload them, nor is it pretty polite since the images either have to be hand-checked for any malicious content or plainly reverted. Would be wise to restrict your work on free images. Thanks. --grin ✎ 13:52, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Orthographic projection: Papua[edit]
Hi, I see that you recently uploaded new versions of File:Asia (orthographic projection).svg and File:Oceania (orthographic projection).svg. Between them, these two maps have a problem - en:Papua, Indonesia, i.e. the western half of New Guinea island - is omitted from both maps. I think that it should be on the Asia one, even though en:Papua New Guinea (which is the eastern half of the same island) is on the Oceania map. Do you think that it could be added, please? --Redrose64 (talk) 20:51, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Wikimedia logos[edit]
Hi, you have uploaded derivative logos of the Wikimedia logos and ask for replacement. As most are copyrighted and trademarked by the Wikimedia Foundation I doubt it's possible we fullfil your requests. Moreover I'm thinking to nominate thoses files for deletion because it's clearly misleading (and probably do not repsect the (c) and (tm) of the Wikimedia Foundation). Best regards --PierreSelim (talk) 07:49, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
- Hi! I don't understand what is misleading and think trademarks have nothing to do with this. Copyright infringement this clearly is but I don't think Wikimedia would sue me considering I'm only trying to help. And nobody else can. Palosirkka (talk) 12:47, 28 September 2012 (UTC)
"Scrubbing" SVGs[edit]
Hello! You started to upload several "scrubbed" SVGs that I have on my watch list, especially location maps. I just compared the new version of File:Czech Republic location map.svg with the one before. Your "scrubbing" ist not only deleting code that is not necessary for the appearance of the map, it cuts the way how the vectors are described, for example: 697.32642, 297.62214 becomes 697.33, 297.62. Of course the file gets smaller but please have in mind that these maps sometimes get scaled to produce new maps and then all these numbers behind the point get important. Deleting these numbers make the maps worse and only save very few disk space. I suggest you stop scrubbing location maps and revert your uploads. Regards, NNW (talk) 12:07, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
- Good point. Will do. Palosirkka (talk) 12:28, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
Hi, per this discussion I've rejected your various outstanding edit requests relating to replacing SVGs with scrubbed versions. If you want to pursue this again, I think a central discussion proposing the changes (eg at COM:VP) is a better way to handle it than lots of edit requests. Rd232 (talk) 14:10, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
Copyright status: File:Emblem of SFR Yugoslavia.svg[edit]
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Emblem of SFR Yugoslavia.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Hi Palosirkka, thanks for pointing to potential copyvios. However, instead of simply writing "probably" it would be better to describe why you think a file might be a copyvio or to provide a URL. Thanks. --Túrelio (talk) 13:00, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

I guess there might not be one as copyvio is a serious allegation and doesn't go well with uncertainly or something. Palosirkka (talk) 15:40, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

We get a fair number of copyvios and try to filter those out. - Hello there! Looks like there is a licensing issue with that image. You originally uploaded it claiming it's an image made by you, which apparently isn't the case but instead you got it from that Chinese web site? I think it's a borderline case whether it is simple enough to not get copyright, I'm not an expert. We would not have to decide that in case somebody has explicitly stated that it's released under a license accepted on Commons, is there a free license? A larger version is here [1]. Deletions and duplicates for Department of Defense uploads[edit]
Hi, thanks for taking time to review some of these uploads. Two points have come up with your recent tagging though:
- You have created a few deletion requests which have not completed correctly. The DR discussion pages have not been created and I have not been notified as the uploader. This might be caused by the script you are using timing out. Example: File:U.S. Navy Engineman Fireman Olusanya Oyeyemi reads a passage from the Bible during a Catholic service aboard the guided missile frigate USS Simpson (FFG 56) off the coast of Dakar, Senegal, March 10, 2012 120310-N-ON468-003.jpg.
- When you mark a duplicate where the same image has different VIRINs (which according to the DoD are supposed to be unique), as you did with File:U.S. Navy Seaman Apprentice Cody Jelinek removes rust from a mooring aboard the guided missile frigate USS Simpson (FFG 56) in the Sierra Leone Basin March 11, 2012 120311-N-ON468-007.jpg, could you please add the additional VIRIN to the description of the file that will remain? This will avoid problems with the same image being uploaded again. Unfortunately as the VIRIN is in the EXIF data for the file, the automatic hash check that Commons does for uploads cannot identify these as duplicates as this includes the EXIF data, so checking whether the VIRIN exists or not in a file description is as good as we can do for the moment (which is how I avoid this problem for new uploads). In this example I have gone ahead and noted it in the information box.
By the way, if you would like to help with a backlog of known duplicates that need checking this way, it would be great if you could spend some time looking at the analysis I ran at User:Faebot/SandboxL. This includes links to handy searches for the VIRINs which may speed up the decision making process of which to keep. Thanks --Fæ (talk) 12:07, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- Hello. Regarding 1. I only added the delete template by hand (I don't do JavaScript) and don't really know how to do a proper deletion request, seems like a huge hassle. I hope and believe that my deletion actions are still rather useful than negative. 2. I'll try to remember to do that. And I might take a look at that list of yours if I have time in the future. Thanks for the comments. Palosirkka (talk) 14:31, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, you should be able to see a link in the left hand Toolbox to Nominate for deletion. You then just have to fill in the nomination text and the tool takes care of the rest. You can find an explanation at Help:Nominate for deletion. --Fæ (talk) 15:05, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

gnux user images[edit]
Hello,
I am a french teacher that organizes the work for this student team (gnux), they have to write and present an excel lesson on wikiversity to other students tomorrow (November 28th). It's very difficult to write a lesson without images of type screen shots. When i have given them the job, I was not aware of the "software screen shot interdictions" on Wikicommons, so the mistake is coming from me, it will never happen again later. We have already found another solution for new images (external links), which can be efficient. But for the old images and links written on their lessons in last 14 days, can you, please, delay the suppression of images to friday, November 29th, just the necessary delay to be quiet during their presentation ?
Thanks a lot.
See you soon.
Mamagalubru
- Hi there! I'm afraid I cannot help you as the images are already deleted and I'm not an admin and cannot undelete the images. Besides that, the images were infringing copyright and thus the policy of Commons so I'm not sure anybody would undelete them. I won't however tag any more images until friday. I guess your students learned a valuable lesson about copyright in this process. I would also like to take this chance to point you to a free office program you could make screenshots of and post those on Commons, LibreOffice. Palosirkka (talk) 20:05, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.
In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

- Ooook. Now also the file you're shown me is fixed. Your statement is correct (imho)... Anyway, I copied another credits formula which is surely correct (yesss, more than a simple "own") and yet used in Commons. Please, remember: we are use to mark for deletion a file (and, even more so, several files) only before a proper discussion with the author, according with netiquette and wikimedia politeness. Last night I had quickly to change all tags, without any help, going to bed very late and bothering a 6-mounths babe. Note that is not useful for me understand you also 'couse I'm italian/genoese speacking... Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Tamil Language Flag 2.svg[edit]
This media may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Tamil Language Flag 2.svg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

File:Sports icon.png[edit]
File:Sports icon.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you believe this file is not a copyright violation, you may replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request. Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

copy right violations for the web science mooc[edit]
Hey Palosirkka, you have marked several of our web science videos as possible copy right violations. you can find the statements on User_talk:Rob-nowman. as stated on User_talk:Yann#undo_deletion_request:_File:Eclipse_Installation.webm we have been creating almost all our content ourselves. I would like to understand the problem with those files. I fought hard with the administration of the university to be able to publish our material under CC-BY-SA in order to go for wikicommons and wikiversity and be able to donate the material as open educational resources. best regards --Renepick (talk) 20:51, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
- These videos incorporate elements of proprietary/copyrighted software (e.g. Microsoft Word) which in turn makes these videos derivatives of non-free content, which is strictly forbidden and strictly enforced on Commons. If the non-free software buttons/graphics/text is cropped out, these videos can be re-uploaded -FASTILY 09:17, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

- Oh, sorry, but you don't have informations about language on your Main Page... Then in english, yesterday, was my upload File:ITunes_12_Screen.png tagged as an image, which can violate the rules... It's a ScreenShot of freeware application by Apple inc., so I thought, that shouldn't be a problem with uploading this file. On the Czech Forum of Wikipedia Commons told me that this is a problem, so I started to deal with the problem differently. Apple inc. has a PR page on which you can find the official photos. https://www.apple.com/pr/products/itunes/itunes.html Just help me, which license should I use for these images? Thank you, and sorry for my english, --MMMHHH (talk) 07:30, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
- No worries. I guess the Czech forum already told you this but by default the copyright law says you can't do anything with the file. Freeware is just gratis but gives you no other permission than to use the said software, no screenshots for example. So unless the copyright holder explicitly gives you permission, a license, to do so. So you'll have to find a license somewhere and if you find one that is compatible with Commons, then you can upload it. Refer to COM:L. I think your English is pretty good btw. Incomplete deletion requests.[edit]
Hi, I noticed that you repeatly creating incomplete deletion requests like i.e. here. They ending up in Category:Incomplete deletion requests - missing subpage and/or Category:Deletion_requests_-_No_timestamp_given. To create complete deletion requests you have to:
- Visit the deletion requests subpage and place the following code: ~~~~
- Go to the deletion requests log and place the following code at the bottom:
- Notify the item's uploader or the creator of the page by placing the following code on the user's talk page: ~~~~
- Additionally, you may want to check for Wikimedia projects that use this item and then remove or, if possible, replace with a superior item.
as describted when you click on the Click here for further instruction "button".
Iin the last days I completed a lot of your incomplete deletion requests.
The easiest way to ensure you don't forget a step is to enable the "quick delete" gadget within your preferences. Then all steps (except 4.) will be done automaticly when you click on "nominate for deletion" on the sitebar.
Could you try to complete your last imcomplete DRs yourself? regards. --JuTa 20:29, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hello and thanks for completing the many DRs in the past. I don't use JavaScript so doing all those steps manually is a huge hassle. Thanks for the clear and comprehensive instructions as well. Take care! Palosirkka (talk) 05:23, 5 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hi, I just see you created other incomplete deletion requests. Again please: When you are raising a deletion request try to do that completely. Thx. --JuTa 21:02, 5 November 2014 (UTC)
- User:JuTa... I think you undo action was borderline vandalism. Think of the best of the project please. It's OK if you don't complete my DRs. But don't undo them either. Again I tell you, I will not use JavaScript. You just undoed 32 DRs, if you want to see how much work it would be to do the complete 4 step process every time, go fill those requests manually for the 32 files, that is what you're requiring of me. Palosirkka (talk) 05:13, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
- No one is forcing you to use JavaScript. However, you shouldn't just leave a mess for other people to clean up. You have two options: 1) Use JavaScript to complete DRs or 2) Fill out all the paperwork properly by hand. Killiondude (talk) 05:37, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

Project scope[edit]
Hi Palosirkka, please respect that Commons has a project scope and that contributed images must be realistically useful for an educational purpose. For this reason please give useful categories and useful descriptions to your images. So that every other user can find your images through their categories and can understand what you want to teach with the images through their descriptions. To meet the project scope please keep everything as educational as possible. Keep in mind that most people in the world do not know what is visible in your images and therefore urgently require understandable descriptions and categories made by you! Think twice before you upload images taken by other people whether or not you are able to provide useful descriptions and categories. Particularly note that images of unidentified objects at unidentified locations like File:Where's All The Gold?.jpg are not anyhow educational and therefore do NOT comply with the project scope! -- Ies (talk) 06:07, 30 May 2015 (UTC)

Visual Studio screenshots and copyright[edit]
Can you please explain why you think that Visual Studio screenshots of my own program and own code are somehow subject to copyright?
- Hi BitBarrel! The screenshots are copyright violations because you're not the copyright holder of the proprietary software in question. Yes, you might own a copy but you can only use it but can't take screenshots of it. That's just the law. Copyright is an international mechanism that gives the copyright holder exclusive rights over the item, others can do very little with it. Palosirkka (talk) 13:23, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

This was marked by you for some reason. It violates nothing, as I state it is my own work.--Billymac00 (talk) 16:35, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Billymac00! Are you the copyright holder of the software in question, i.e. did you write that software? (I can't remember or see what it was anymore) If yes, then it's best to clearly indicate it. If you just purchased a copy of some proprietary software, then your screenshot was a copyvio, unless you have a separate permission for making one and in such a case the permission should be clearly indicated. Palosirkka (talk) 17:20, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
- OEIS A117825 has a license line at the bottom, it boils down to File:Creative Commons "Non-Commercial" icon (SVG, nominal 64x64).svg, and as it happens this is how I ended up here five years ago (as former OEIS contributor). Unrelated, I stumbled over this debate while checking why somebody recreated an empty user page for you, but obviously you have no serious objections. Be..anyone (talk) 19:11, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

fabian tortoise[edit]
It seems to me the tortoise was first used in this 1951 pamphlet ( https://digital.library.lse.ac.uk/objects/lse:tik383teg ), but i might be wrong. Please add the original source, as you did not create the tortoise. If it really was first used in 1951, it may still be in copyright, and so is ineligible for Wikimedia Commons. Thank you.
Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Fabian tortoise 32w352523352.png[edit]
This media may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Fabian tortoise 32w352523352.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image".
Thank you! |

Flickr uploads[edit]
When uploading images from Flickr you must always upload the highest resolution image that is know as the "original" and not a low resolution image as you did with File:Hard worker.jpg. Even better is to use the Flickr2Commons upload tool that takes care of all the important stuff and choose the best quality image. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 15:31, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Ww2censor and thanks for the suggestion. Sadly the tool requires JavaScript and I don't want to use such things, JS is a safety hazard. I also have a slow network uplink so I rather let the bot do the upload of the largest size image, e.g. [2] Have a nice 2018! --Palosirkka (talk) 12:26, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
- It's a pity you have a slow connection but not everyone has great internet speed. Regarding JS, maybe the regular upload wizard, found by clicking the "Upload file" found on the left side of your screen does not use it but I'm not familiar with its technology. The problem is that the bot does not always replace a low resolution version with the highest one meaning that a file must be manually reviewed and the fewer we have to do the better. This was the case of the File:Hard worker.jpg I reviewed because the bot could not find the image at Flickr until it recognised the image as uploaded. Perhaps if you had selected 240 x 160 it might have been able to do the job. I don't know how it recognised the one you mentioned. Thanks anyway. Ww2censor (talk) 14:55, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
- I made the bot author aware of this issue User_talk:Zhuyifei1999#Unexpectedly_FlickreviewR_2:_size_not_found. Looks like the problem is a Flickr bug. I fully support offloading work to bots, that's what I'm too trying to do here. --Palosirkka (talk) 17:46, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
File:Africa-countries-northern.svg[edit]
Hello.
Can you add Montenegro (because it was forgotten) and color South Sudan in light green (because it is more often counted as part of East Africa as well in regional schemes) in File:Africa-countries-northern.svg you uploaded?
I am adding South Sudan (as well as Montenegro and other possible missing updates) in the PNG maps in Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries and Category:Maps needing Montenegro political boundaries, and then remove this category after updating them. There were close to 1100 maps since I started to update these files from 1 March 2018, now it is reduced to less than 780 maps, but there is a long way to go.
Unfortunately I don't know how to edit SVG maps myself, that is why I asked you.
Thank you.

Marking blurry items[edit]
Hi Palosirkka. You have started marking a number of images of paintings with the "blurry" template. Not sure what you wish to gain from it, and not sure how productive this effort is. As you can see, the images are rather old, typically 2002 or thereabout. They are used as documentation of the painters' works and they are at the time the ONLY images we have. So it is a choice between uploading or not having the work in our collection. Believe me, I ignore a lot of images of inferior quality from the auction houses, but some are - just - passable. Of course they will be replaced if the painting turns up at a later auction. So there is really no point in having the blurry template, anybody can see that the image is not perfect. You may disagree, and that is your right. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 15:48, 5 May 2020 (UTC)
- Hello User:Rsteen! I thought about it and came to the same conclusion. The wording of the template is actually pretty funny. "can be replaced if something better comes along" I mean like you said, that's what anybody would do anyways. Please do understand that I meant no offence with the tagging. What you're doing is great, please don't change anything. I completely agree it's better to have a bad quality version of a painting than nothing. Maybe we should have a Not blurry instead, as in tagging the good ones... there's plenty of sub par images around. Thanks again for helping bring the great works of art available. And stay safe friend! --Palosirkka (talk) 17:57, 6 May 2020 (UTC)
- Hi again Palosirkka. I am glad we agree. Maybe the "blurry" template is more relevant for photos of buildings and things. Sometimes people would just upload their shots of a church or a town hall, no matter the quality, and in that case it would be a good idea to mark the photo, to encourage someone to come along and make a better photo. Enjoy your time on Commons and thanks for your kind words. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 18:59, 6 May 2020 (UTC)
Template:Remove border[edit]
Hello!
I changed your tagging from Remove border (which is for still images) to Crop video so you know. Also, please let the categories be furthest down on all pages and tag files with Remove border, or perhaps BadJPEG a bit further up. Preferably above the license header. Cheers - Jonteemil (talk) 20:36, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

How do I prove the event was held if it the images are deleted as it was an online event?

- Hi Tochiprecious! The problem was the pictures were of some computer program that you have no right to screenshot, i.e. proprietary software. That's what copyright law says... I know it sucks, that's why I only use and recommend free software. You will have to come up with some other way, perhaps there is none. --Palosirkka (talk) 15:45, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I think you deleted some of the picture which I uploaded to Wikimedia. all these pictures are taken from journals which provide Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license to works they publish such PLoS one, neuroimage etc. How can I to cancel the deletion. all the best, Shai. for example see: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/s/journal-information https://www.elsevier.com/journals/neuroimage/1053-8119/open-access-journal etc. Shaishyy (talk) 16:36, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- Hello Shaishyy! I'm glad to be found to be found wrong and apparently the images can be included as you say. I merely flagged the images since I could not find the permissions, it's a good idea to include the permission links in the uploads so they won't end up deleted like here. There is a permission parameter in the information template. Some admin deleted the uploads and it takes an admin to undelete them as well. I'm not familiar with the undeletion process but seems like this Commons:Undeletion requests is the place to go to. Thank you for your contributions. --Palosirkka (talk) 10:00, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
