As a part of strengthening international relations, Unisa’s College of Science, Engineering, and Technology (CSET) hosted delegates from Tianjin Polytechnic University of China (TJPU) on 5 December 2017 at the Science Campus in Florida. The purpose of the visit was to discuss further research collaboration between the two universities.
TJPU is a state-run full-time institution of higher education, which is jointly established by the Ministry of Education and Tianjin Municipal Government.
In the memorandum of agreement, the universities agreed to establish direct full partnership to:
This partnership will create an environment for research, educational and training excellence, and a platform to the open exchange of ideas.
The visit comes after an earlier visit to TJPU by Prof Bhekie Mamba, Executive Dean of CSET, and Prof Titus Msagati, of the Nanotechnology and Water Sustainability (NanoWS) Research Unit, in October 2017.
Prof Qingxin Yang, President of the Tianjin Polytechnic University, led a delegation to experience the Science Campus with its state-of-the-art equipment and to witness the ongoing research in its labs. His team consisted of Prof Xiaoming Liu, Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering and Automation; Prof Jianming Wang, Dean of the School of Computer Science & Software; Prof Yunxia Hu, Deputy-Director of Membrane Separation & Processing National Key Laboratory; and Xingguo Zhang, Director of the International Office.
The CSET team presented the research projects that the college is engaged with, including its flagship research areas. The presentations ensured that research areas of mutual interest were clearly identified.
The visit ended with the tour to the laboratories at the Science Campus, including the Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, the School of Computing’s Human-Computer Interface (HCI), and NaNoWS laboratories.
The delegation was impressed by the equipment and instrumentation. “We are very impressed by the equipment in these labs. Establishing joint projects with a student exchange programme will be an opportunity for us,” said Yang. TJPU offered six scholarships to external students and of those who received the scholarships are three Unisa students who are now pursuing their PhD studies in Tianjin.
