Student Retention Project

Background

The College of Human Sciences had more than 54 000 students registered in 2018. The pass rate in the past three years moved from 75.6% in 2016 to 71.9% in May/June 2018. The decrease affected the throughput rate of the College and that of the University. it is a known factor that the throughput rate is one indicator of the success measure at any University.

Goal

The strategic goal of the University of South Africa is to improve the throughput rates and promote graduateness.

Aim

  • To deal with student inquires on the first call, text message, email, web chart or instant messaging by providing correct information relating to the college of human science.
  • To tracking student progress from admission till graduation.
  • To monitor the defaulting student in terms of assignment submission and seating for examination.
  • To ensure that student have enough information before hand to make informed career and qualification decisions.

Activities

The College of Human Sciences, in the office of tuition and Learner Support designed a support project which will conduct the following activities:

Identify and track the students at risk who:

  • are not submitting their assignments; 
  • have failed the module more than once;
  • did not sit for the examination.

Once the students are identified, they will be offered focused interventions and referred to the relevant support departments.
