Chancellor
In selecting and appointing a new chancellor, Unisa carefully considered attributes and qualities that resonated with its vision and mission to become "the African university shaping futures in the service of humanity". There was consensus in selecting His Excellency Dr Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki, an outstanding African intellectual giant and the most recognisable 21st century proponent of the African Renaissance, who is highly regarded internationally. He has been involved in various leadership roles in the anti-apartheid liberation struggle and post-apartheid nation-building programme for almost six decades. He continues to be involved in a range of conflict-resolution and development initiatives in Africa. Dr Mbeki was officially inaugurated as Chancellor on Monday 27 February 2017.
Profile
Dr Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki was born on 18 June 1942 in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. He joined the ANC Youth League in 1956 at the age of 13 and left South Africa for exile in 1962.
Dr Mbeki read Economics at Sussex University in England up to master's degree level. He was a member of the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC). He was appointed Deputy President of South Africa in 1994 and twice elected President in 1999 and 2004. On September 23, 2008, Mr. Mbeki resigned as President of South Africa after being asked to do so by the ANC NEC.
He is currently Chair of the AU High Level Implementation Panel for Sudan which is assisting the democratisation process in Sudan and the AU-UN High Level Panel on Illicit Financial Outflows from Africa.
Dr Mbeki has previously facilitated peace negotiations in various African countries, including Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Burundi, the Comoros, Côte d'Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is the patron of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation and Thabo Mbeki African School of Public and International Affairs in partnership with the University of South Africa.
Dr Mbeki is married to Mrs Zanele Mbeki.

In die verkiesing en aanstelling van ’n nuwe kanselier, het Unisa sorgvuldig kenmerke en eienskappe oorweeg wat sy visie en missie om “die Afrika-universiteit te word wat toekomsdrome in diens van die mensdom verwesenlik” weergee. Daar was konsensus in die verkiesing van Sy Eksellensie, Dr Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki, ’n internasionaal hoog aangeskrewe en briljante intellektuele reus in Afrika, en die mees herkenbare 21ste-eeuse voorstander van die Afrika-renaissance. Hy was vir byna ses dekades betrokke by verskeie leierskapsrolle in die anti-apartheid-vryheidstryd en post-apartheid-nasiebouprogram. Hy is steeds betrokke by verskeie konflikoplossing- en ontwikkelingsinisiatiewe in Afrika. Dr Mbeki is op Maandag 27 Februarie 2017 amptelik ingehuldig as Kanselier.

Dr Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki is op 18 Junie 1942 in die Oos-Kaapprovinsie van Suid-Afrika gebore. Hy het in 1956, op die ouderdom van 13, by die ANC se Jeugliga (ANCYL) aangesluit, en het Suid-Afrika in ballingskap verlaat in 1962.
Dr Mbeki het Ekonomie tot op meestersgraadvlak studeer aan die Sussex-universiteit in Engeland. Hy is sedert 1975 ’n lid van die ANC se Nasionale Uitvoerende Komitee (NEC). In 1994 is hy as Visepresident van Suid-Afrika aangewys, en is twee keer (in 1999 en 2004) as President verkies. Op 23 September 2008 het Dr Mbeki as President van Suid-Afrika bedank, nadat hy deur die ANC NEC gevra is om dit te doen.
Hy is tans Voorsitter van die AU High Level Implementation Panel for Sudan, wat help met die demokratiseringsproses in die Soedan, en die AU-UN High Level Panel on Illicit Financial Outflows from Africa.
Dr Mbeki het voorheen vredesonderhandelinge aangehelp in verskeie Afrika-lande, insluitende Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Comoro-eilande, die Ivoorkus en die Demokratiese Republiek Kongo.
