The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES) is strategically located at the Unisa Science Campus in Johannesburg, reflecting the university’s commitment to advancing scientific research and innovation. Schools, Departments, and Research Units
CAES comprises two schools, research centres, a specialized research unit and the experimental farm.
School of Agriculture and Life Sciences
This school focuses on addressing Africa’s agricultural and scientific challenges through integrated teaching, research, and community engagement.
- Department of Agriculture and Animal Health
Covers plant and animal sciences, agricultural economics, extension services, animal health, and agribusiness.
- Department of Life and Consumer Sciences
Encompasses disciplines such as human physiology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, botany, biology, biotechnology, genetics, microbiology, and zoology. Consumer sciences focus on food science, clothing and textiles, nutrition, and hospitality management.
School of Ecological and Human Sustainability
Dedicated to fostering environmental responsibility and sustainability through research and education.
- Department of Geography
Explores human and physical geography, environmental interactions, sustainability, urban planning, tourism and geographical information systems.
- Department of Environmental Sciences
Specializes in environmental management, nature conservation, horticulture, eco-tourism, soil science, biodiversity, and parks and recreation management. The department also has a strong postgraduate research focus.

- Centre for Sustainable Agriculture and Environmental Sciences
Offers Short Learning Programmes (SLPs) to enhance skills and knowledge in agriculture and environmental management.
- Applied Behavioural Ecology & Ecosystem Research Unit (ABEERU)
Established in 2003, ABEERU provides research training and services in behavioural ecology, ecosystem management, and biodiversity conservation. The unit collaborates with national and international institutions to promote sustainable environmental practices.
- Centre of Excellence: Adaptation and Resilience
Launched in May 2023, the Centre of Excellence aims to be a global-leading Centre providing cutting-edge research, best practice, education, leadership, support and training in the area of adaptation and resilience thus contributing to social change and supporting vulnerable communities in Africa. The Centre partners with communities and others to define the research agenda for relevancy and meaningful impact.
- Centre of Competence in Environmental Biotechnology
The centre was established with the aim of providing a platform from which partnerships between industry and research institutes are formed through collaboration to develop innovative technologies aimed at improving environmental waste management.
Experimental Farm
The Unisa Experimental Farm is a pioneering research and training facility within the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES). Designed to support Agriculture, Environmental Science, Geography, Life, and Consumer Sciences, the farm serves as a hub for practical learning, sustainability research, and industry collaboration.
Through this facility, students, researchers, and industry partners gain hands-on experience in innovative agricultural techniques, environmental conservation, and sustainable food systems.
