OR Tambo International Airport

Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport is “Africa's biggest and busiest airport, facilitating over 21 million passengers a year.” It also serves as the hub of South Africa’s flagship airline, South African Airways (SAA).

Lanseria airport is the only other internationally accredited airport in South Africa. It currently operates flights within South Africa and is home to various private charter companies.

Transport options from OR Tambo and Lanseria airports

If you have not arranged a private hotel shuttle or pick-up prior to arrival, the following transport options are available to you upon arrival in South Africa.

  1. Gautrain
    1. The Gautrain is an 80 kilometre high-speed commuter rail system in Gauteng with direct access via a station at OR Tambo airport. Passengers boarding from OR Tambo airport to Pretoria (Unisa Muckleneuk and Sunnyside campuses) must change trains at Marlboro Station to connect to Pretoria following the N-S route.
    2. Upon arrival in Pretoria, passengers can board a Gautrain bus to move around the city. Passengers travelling to Johannesburg can disembark from the Gautrain at various stations including Sandton, Rosebank and Park.

  2. Metered taxis, Uber and Taxify
    1. Various metered taxis are available at both OR Tambo and Lanseria airports.

  4. Car hire
    1. International travelers can also rent a vehicle from various car rental companies  in South Africa. Most recognised rental companies have facilities at both OR Tambo and Lanseria airport.
    2. These include, amongst others, Europa Rental, Avis, Bidvest and Thrifty.
    3. Travellers are reminded that most car rental companies will require you to present a valid passport and driver’s license to rent a car.
