Unisa has several bilateral and multilateral agreements with national and international institutions and further participates in various academic and research mobility and collaborative grants, fellowships and programmes with other countries. One of these programmes is the Erasmus Plus+ Programme of the European Union (EU). The Erasmus+ programme aims, amongst other things, to advance internationalisation through the establishment of networks, linkages and collaborations in order to promote skills, training and research, and sharing of information and expertise.
Through this programme, Unisa and the Romanian-America University (RAU) have agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding and to provide immediate opportunities for academic and professional mobility – this as part of programme implementation as well as to cement existing relations. As a result, four Unisa colleagues have been afforded opportunities in this regard, with three of them, Prof Mercy Makhitha, Dr Nthabeleng Mmako, and Prof Mathius Mujinga, already in Bucharest, Romania for academic mobility purposes. Ms Siza Magubane, meanwhile, will take up a post in June 2022 at RAU for professional mobility purposes.
Overall, the programme will aim to strengthen relations between the parties and expand Unisa’s footprint, while exposing Unisa colleagues and the University itself to the EU education system, particularly in terms of teaching and learning. There will also be opportunities for the sharing of knowledge and expertise between Unisa and RAU and for expanding RAU’s position in collaboration with African institutions. Future mobility for staff and students will be encouraged, insights shared and strategic networks for future collaborations and internationalisation – including joint degrees, co-supervision and publishing – fostered.
