During the Universities South Africa (USAf) virtual engagement of 27 April 2022, HELM (Higher Education and Leadership) Engage #7 on Internationalisation, Hans de Wit presented a refined and extended definition of internationalisation. He defined it as ‘the Intentional process of integrating an international, intercultural or global dimension into the purpose, functions and delivery of post-secondary education, in order to enhance the quality of education and research for all students and staff and to make a meaningful contribution to society.”
While there are various definitions of internationalisation, as well as arguments for and against it, we tend to agree with the above, extended definition as it puts focus on the Unisa’s intention to advance quality teaching and learning, engaged scholarship, impactful research and sustainability. It also seems to speak to the below point on the work done by Unisa towards the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
