Programme in Safety Management (72435)

Duration: The Programme in Safety Management is a 12-month programme.

Language medium: Exam papers and course material will only be in English.

Target group:

Specifically, the course is aimed at aspirant managers, shop stewards, supervisors, inspectors, safety representatives/practitioners/managers, training officials and occupational hygienists.

Admission requirements:

Matric certificate - Pass only. Your results and subjects are not relevant OR
No Senior Certificate (Matric), relevant work experience (CV with employer's reference letter) and other prior learning courses, can be considered.

Registration periods:

No online registration for these short programme/courses are available through the official website.

Registration takes place from 1 December until the end of March. The fee per candidate is R 7200.00. This includes all study material, examinations fees etc. (A Centre for Business Management registration form must be completed and submitted before full payment).

Kind of assessment:

Students are evaluated by means of formative assessment assignments and formal written summative assessment examinations. Two assignments are set for each module. One examination paper for each of the four modules will be written in January / February of the year following the initial registration. The duration of the examination paper will be two hours. Purpose statement:

This course focuses on the science of Safety Management and the safety responsibilities of both line managers and staff safety practitioners. This programme introduces line managers and safety practitioners to the very basics in safety management. Such basics comprise the sciences of safety management and the roles of line and staff functionaries pertaining to safety risk assessment, safety management in industry and the analysis of safety incidents.

The focus and contents of the programme is unique in the sense that it prepares both managers and safety practitioners for performing their roles and functions on a professional and scientific basis. The program focus on meeting the needs of line managers and staff safety practitioners in achieving their legal responsibilities and professional accountability in making the workplace and the work procedures as safe as possible for all involved

PSMP015 - INTRODUCTION TO SAFETY MANAGEMENT

Topics covered - Safety Management: definition and philosophy. - Cornerstones of a safety management programme. - Hazard analysis. - Line and staff safety responsibilities. - Define the nature of safety management. - Identify the characteristics of hazards in terms of safety. - Interpret the basic legal safety management responsibilities of line and staff functionaries as specified in the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85/1993) (OHS Act) and Mine Health and Safety Act (26/1993) (MHS Act).

PSMP026 - ASSESS SAFETY RISK

Topics covered - Assessment of safety risk: definition and philosophy. - Levels and forms of safety risk assessment. - Hazard analysis in accordance with OHS Act, MHS Act, SANS and others. - Assessment of safety risk levels. - Perform a hazard analysis and safety risk assessment in the workplace. - Evaluate the different forms of safety risk assessments. - Describe the process and outcome of a risk assessment. - Evaluate the outcome of risk assessment.

PSMP038 - MANAGE SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE

Topics covered - Safety management programme: Definition and philosophy. - Elements of an effective safety management programme. - Guidelines for developing and implementing a safety management programme as specified in industry. - Determinants of safety management programme efficiency. - Justify the nature, purpose and processes in developing measures to effectively address given safety risk levels in an organisation. - Interpret and verify guidelines for developing safety control measures. - Evaluate safety control measures to manage safety risk for specific business operations.

PSMP049 - ANALYSE SAFETY INCIDENTS

Topics covered - Incident analysis: Basic terms and philosophy. - Phases of and processes in incident analysis... - Assess a workplace incident that occurred in business operations with the view to develop appropriate precautionary measures by using case studies in accordance with legal requirements (OHS Act, MHS Act, etc.). - Identify root causes. - Evaluating guidelines for developing control measures to rectify flaws in safety management systems. - Validate guidelines for writing a report on the outcome of incident assessment.
