Ancient Greek and Latin Short Courses

The formal level 1 Ancient Greek and Latin semester modules were discontinued at the end of 2017.

These modules will be replaced from 2018 by new Short Courses in Ancient Greek and Latin. Please note that these Short Courses will not be credit-bearing to any degree programme.

For more information on the courses CSAGRE1 and SCBLS01 see below:

CSAGRE1: Introduction to Ancient Greek Grammar and Syntax

The purpose of Introduction to Ancient Greek Grammar and Syntax is to teach complete beginners a basic knowledge of Greek grammar, syntax and vocabulary, which will enable them to read and translate easy Greek sentences and passages, via an 8-month intensive online programme (students will therefore need internet access).  The course will start on 1 March 2018.

The cost of the programme is ZAR 1000.

SCBLS01: Short Course in Basic Latin Grammar and Syntax

The aim of the Short Course SCBLS01 is to teach the basic Latin Grammar and Syntax to students who have not previously completed any course or module in Latin, and who want to be able to read passages and literature in Latin. The course is presented with an inductive approach. Prospective students will read, from the outset, simple Latin texts, designed to tell the ‘story’ of a family living in ancient Roman society. Students will also learn about the culture and history of the ancient Romans in an informal way, while being exposed to grammar principles, Latin vocabulary and English vocabulary building.

The cost of the Short Course, presented via a 10-month intensive online programme, is ZAR 2000. The Course will start on 1 February 2018, and students will be allowed to work at their own pace within the 10-month period.
