Unisa Gauteng Region joins International Mandela Day celebrations

The central pillar and fountain of Unisa’s Strategic Vision 2030 is expressed through its vision statement, "The African university shaping futures in the service of humanity". For this reason, the Unisa Gauteng Region, in collaboration with Tirisano Community Projects, joined the nation and the international community in their support of and participation in the celebration of Mandela Day, led and championed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The celebrations were recently hosted at Ramoshidi Secondary School, Seabe Village Mpumalanga.

The Gauteng Region Counselling Unit planned the event under the supervision of Dr Enid Pitsoane, Acting Deputy Director of Academic and Technology Support. Other institutions that supported the event included the Tshwane University of Technology, Flyzulu Aviation, the South African Police Services from Johannesburg and Shrinkage Control Services. Pitsoane said: "Unisa is keen and honoured to celebrate the life and times of Madiba, one of the illustrious alumni of the university. We aimed to provide Grade 10–12 learners with career talks and motivation on pursuing different careers in art, drama, and aviation."

Pitsoane added: "The event included a girl/boy child dialogue and awareness on gender-based violence, drug and substance abuse, and general crime prevention. In addition, the team also delivered care packages containing toiletry items such as face cloths, body lotion, toothpaste and toothbrushes for the children. At the same time, girl children also received sanitary towels. These packages were donations from various Unisa staff members and external stakeholders. The event was one of many that showed that Unisa practises Nelson Mandela’s values."
