Purpose statement:
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare students for a career in all Electrical engineering fields as professional practitioners and researchers. The undergraduate Electrical Engineering Technology stream at UNISA comprises three qualifications namely:
1. 288 credits Diploma in Engineering Technology in Electrical Engineering,
2. Advanced Certificate in Engineering Practice in Electrical Engineering,
3. Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Process Control or Power Engineering or Telecommunications).
The Bachelor of Engineering Technology Honours in Electronic Engineering, in combination with the Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Advanced Certificate in Engineering Practice in Electrical Engineering and the 288 credits Diploma in Engineering Technology in Electrical Engineering were developed in accordance with the ECSA specifications: E - 09 - PT, E- 05 - PT, E - 21 - PN and E - 08 - PN respectively, considering all Exit Levels Outcomes as defined by ECSA. A Bachelor of Engineering Technology Honours graduate will be able to competently apply an integration of theory, principles, advanced techniques, research methodology, practical experience and appropriate skills to complex electrical/electronic engineering problems in the field of engineering while operating within the relevant standards and codes. They will be able to demonstrate a comprehensive general engineering knowledge, as well as systematic knowledge, of the terms, procedures and advanced principles of the engineering discipline; gather evidence from the relevant sources using advanced retrieval skills, organize and synthesize information to be used for research and technology improvement and present the information professionally in a mode appropriate to the audience. Demonstrate the capacity to understand advanced engineering business management and entrepreneurship within an engineering technical context.
Engineering students completing this qualification will demonstrate competence in all the Exit Level Outcomes contained in this standard.
The specific purpose of educational programmes designed to meet this qualification are to build the necessary knowledge, understanding, abilities and skills required for further learning towards becoming a competent practicing Professional Engineer. This qualification provides:
a. Preparation for careers in engineering and areas that potentially benefit from engineering skills, for achieving technical proficiency and competency to make a contribution to the economy and national development.
b. The educational base required for registration as a Candidate and/or a Professional Technologist with Engineering Council of South Africa.
c. Entry to a Master's qualification.
Please note:
An appropriate NQF level 7 qualification in Electrical Engineering from an accredited provider of higher education with a minimum of 60% average.
Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements as indicated above may apply for admission through recognition of prior learning (RPL) provided they are at least 30 years old with a minimum of five years' current, relevant working and research experience in line with the approved qualification's RPL requirements. academic motivation offering evidence of your ability to study a postgraduate qualification, work experience relevant to the qualification and courses completed since graduating with the Bachelor's Degree or Advanced Diploma.
These appeals will only be considered if the enrolment target of the qualification has not been met and/or additional enrolment spaces are available.
