Purpose statement:

To teach students a basic knowledge of Latin grammar, syntax and vocabulary, which will enable them to read and translate easy Latin sentences and passages. It will furthermore improve studentsメ literacy, English vocabulary building and communication skills through a study of the Latin roots in English. The module will also introduce students to the rich mythology and culture of the ancient Romans.

Modules:

SCBLS01 - Basic Latin Grammar and Syntax

Syllabus/Content: General language principles: parts of speech and syntax (simple, compound and complex sentences); The origin and development of the Latin language, and an introduction to Latin as inflected/synthetic language; Basic morphology of Latin parts of speech Basic use of Latin parts of speech The moods of Latin verbs Translation of Latin sentences and passages; Etymology: English vocabulary-building with Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes; Basic aspects of ancient Roman history and culture.
