Sanele Dlamini, who became a Unisa graduate on 11 October 2022, is the embodiment of zeal and tenacity. Now the proud holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, specialising in the Senior and FET phases, she believes teaching is her calling, and admits she would have stopped at nothing to realise her dream of becoming a teacher.
Born and bred in the dusty township of Thembisa in Emangweni, Dlamini began her career as a volunteer at her former alma mater, Zitikeni Secondary, and gradually worked her way up, joining the school governing board’s Educator Programme. Despite encountering financial challenges, she was determined to persevere.
The principal at Zitikeni Secondary motivated her to apply for a Department of Education Presidential Youth Employment Initiative phase 1 - 3 teacher assistant post. Participating in phases 1 and 2 of the programme ignited her passion and prompted her to start studying through Unisa. Through hard work and dedication, she obtained a tertiary qualification.
According to Dlamini, Unisa opened doors for her, and established her in the teaching field. As a distance learning entity, the university offered her the opportunity to work while studying, and to complete her teaching practice. She is grateful to her Unisa lecturers and the groups in Telegram for their invaluable and sustained support. In her view, Unisa is the best distance institution in the world, consistently producing quality graduates.
Zitikeni Secondary has since welcomed Dlamini to a permanent post as a professional teacher. Thanks to her solid tertiary grounding, she believes she is equipped and ready to serve her community and the learners in her care, not only by sharing with them her knowledge of her subject, but also guiding them to become well-rounded future professionals.
