Empowerment as a tool to fight gender-based violence

Unisa is honoured to host the 2022 South African Chapter of the International Association of Women Judges (SAC-IAW) Conference and the Annual General Meeting from 5 to 7 August. SAC-IAW is an association of female and male judicial officers in South Africa (SA) inaugurated by Unisa’s Chancellor and Former President Thabo Mbeki on 8 August 2004.

The theme of the conference is "Empowerment as a tool to fight gender-based violence #Breaking Barriers and Bias". The conference will provide an opportunity for both organisations to build networks and strengthen collaborations ensuring that South Africa’s Judges’ Council promotes independence, impartiality, dignity, accessibility and judiciary effectiveness.

As stakeholders in this partnership, Unisa’s College of Law (CLAW) and Prof Puleng LenkaBula, Principal and Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Unisa, are excited to host a conference of this calibre at Unisa. The conference's programme boasts a list of captains of the industry, including Chief Justice Raymond Zondo; Deputy Chief Justice and SA’s first female jurist who has served as President of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa and the first female Chancellor of the University of Mpumalanga, Mandisa Muriel Maya; Judge Margie Victor; the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) Advocate Joyce Maluleke; and Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola.

Unisa plays a considerable part in promoting gender equality in the justice system and society. As an African university in the service of humanity, the institution is committed to partnering with institutions and organisations that fight against any form of oppression, exploitation and prejudice.
