The Department has a flexible tuition system. The wide choice of modules ensures a more than adequate background of basic statistical concepts and techniques. At the same time it offers the opportunity to learn about more specialised topics such as sample surveys, sampling techniques, experimental design, forecasting, data analysis and quality control.

Chair of Department (Statistics)

Welcome to the Department of Statistics (DoS), the centre of statistical methods and approaches. The DoS strives for excellence in terms of three academic pillars: Teaching and Learning, Research and Innovation, and Engaged Scholarship. Our department offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, from a Higher Certificate in Statistics, to BSc degrees, BSc honours degrees, an MSc and doctoral studies in Statistics. The staff members pride themselves on the excellent service they provide to their students. The department comprises experienced and qualified academics who are appointed at various levels, from professors (two NRF c-rated professors) to junior lecturers. As Unisa is a leading CODeL learning institution that admits students globally, the lecturers have an integrated online teaching approach to reach all students.

To comply with the latest trends, we constantly review our modules and programmes. The introduction of the Postgraduate Diploma in Data Science will enhance our computational curriculum, which will be relevant to the new academic demands.

Our academics produce research that is both aligned with and addresses South Africa’s national imperatives. We have a scope of research, which includes statistical modelling, time series and Applied Multivariate Methods. Some of our research focus areas are aligned with three of Unisa’s catalytic niche area: health, science and technology. Our senior staff members are strongly mentoring the emerging scholars and women in statistics within the department.

We have signed a memorandum of agreement with the Dire Dawa University, Ethiopia, which will enhance research, postgraduate student exchange programmes, online exchange offerings,  and more. We have also initiated collaborative research with other universities outside the continent. We are also initiating and encouraging collaborative research with postdoctoral fellows, research associates, and more.

Through engaged scholarship, our research is extended to teaching statistics at government entities and at schools. We pride ourselves on our partnership with learners from Willow Crescent Secondary Eldorado Park Secondary School.

You are welcome to join us at the Department of Statistics at Unisa.
