Leandra Mahalutchmee Naidoo, a resilient student from the heart of KwaZulu-Natal's South Coast, Port Shepstone, has triumphed over adversity and disability to achieve her dreams. Born with congenital glaucoma, she faced numerous challenges from an early age, eventually losing vision in her left eye at just 18 months old. Despite these obstacles, she persevered with her right eye, completing her matric with the help of multiple medical procedures.
The road to pursuing her passion for education was not easy. The likelihood of unemployment and negative opinions from others were constant hurdles that put doubt on her ability to achieve her higher education aspiration due to her visual impairment. However, undeterred by these challenges, Naidoo's determination shone through as she pursued her goals relentlessly to the end.
Her interest in helping others, studying human behaviour and counselling inspired her to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Human Social Services (Psychological Counselling). She explains that Unisa was her university of choice because of its accessible and affordable model. Although the journey was far from smooth, Naidoo never gave up and achieved remarkable exam results.
During her studies, she relied on technology and support from the unit of Advocacy and Resource Centre for Students with Disabilities (ARCSWiD) to access electronic textbooks and materials. However, she points out that the system still needs improvement to provide visually impaired students with a more seamless and inclusive experience. She advocates for a separate sister unit within Unisa explicitly catering to the needs of visually impaired students, offering comprehensive training in disabled education and support services.
Naidoo's story is a source of inspiration for all students, especially students with disabilities facing challenges in their pursuit of education. She urges students in similar situations not to lose hope and to persevere, knowing they are just as capable as any other student. "With faith, determination and a supportive community, anything is possible," she says.
Unisa strives to create an inclusive society where all individuals are given equal opportunities to succeed.
